I can't believe my 20 month old daughter took her first unassisted steps a year ago this coming sunday. when other moms ask how old my little monster is and when did she start walking they are all shocked. this got me wondering, how big is your 20 month old and when did they start walking? Bella is currently 19lbs 12oz, 33.5" and walked at 8 months 9 days. many other moms tell me that the bigger the child the later they walk.

Its funny, I used to think the same thing. My son was always bigger then others. He is now 21 months and around 29/30 pounds and 35 inches tall. He was about 25 pounds at his 1 year appointment. He didn't walk until almost 14 months. However, a child I know who is now 40 pounds at 18 months walked just before his birthday. So I don't know if it makes a difference. I have seen that kids excel in different areas faster. So, for example, your daughter walked early, but maybe she didn't start talking until later. My son talked early, but walked a little later. I think it has to do with the 2 sides of their brains. They can't learn to use both sides at the same time, or something like that.

Yes it is commonly thought that bigger children achieve gross motor milestones a bit later - however this is just an observation, it is not evidenced in developmental research.

8 months is young to walk - the range for waking is 9-18 months with the great majority walking between 10 and 16 months.

When I convert 19 pounds 12 ounces to kilos, I get 8.9 kilos, which is quite small. Link to WHO growth chart percentiles for girls 0-2:

My 21 month old is 29 lbs. and started walking at 15 months. He cruised what seemed like forever!! He was a preemie, but the doctor said all is good with his growth :)

My Bubba is a big Bubba- I think he is around 31#'s and is about 32 inches.... he walked exactly the day he turned a year old- on his birthday :) He is my sweet boy who does everything exactly on time- was born on his due date too.... I don't think size makes a difference- my bunny Eva was 11 months and walking and she has always been a big kid too :)

My little guy is somewhere around 35 lbs. Not sure how tall he is. I think he's grown a bit since his 18 month checkup. He started walking at 10 months. He got walkers for Christmas and by January he was on the move!

Yes my daughter is 21 months and 25lbs and she walked at 13 months. But it took her so long to start walking she was running by the next day. She picked up on it extremely quick.

My 20 month old son is 32 pounds and 34 1/2" tall and he started walking at 9 months.

I got to disagree with the bigger they are the later they walk. My daughter was a big baby too and she walked at 7 months. She was early for everything. My son isn't. I think it just depends on the kid. Every kid is different.

My daughter, Isabella started walking right before her first birthday in march. She weighs about 23 pounds now and is about 26 in. She's really short (can a baby be short? Lol) but her doctor said it's okay. I wouldn't worry about what other say about your little one. I mean all babies grow differently!
