Acid reflux anyone?

Help! My acid reflux gets really bad right when I'm laying down to go to bed. Tums don't do the trick and I've tried not eating or drinking for a while before I lay down and that doesn't seem to make a difference either. Anyone find anything out there to help them with this problem? It's hard to go to sleep because I feel so sick!

Have you tried Zantac? My 6 year old has acid reflux too. That's what they have her on and it works wonders.

I have found that eggnog, non-alcoholic of course, does the best for me. Unfortunately, they only sell it at Christmas. I have also found that chewing a piece of gum will help because the saliva that is generated counteracts the stomach acid. I have actually gone to bed chewing gum a few times.

I suffered through the first 6 months of my pregnancy thinking I could only take tums. I have severe acid reflux even when I'm not pregnant. After bringing it up a few times my doctor finally prescribed me Omeprazole which IS safe during pregnancy. It is the same thing as Prilosec Over the Counter. It is basically a "system" as you take it everyday not just when you're having symptoms. I can't tell you how much better I feel as I don't get acid reflux anymore.

I have had terrible reflux with this baby. I don't remember where I read it but I read somewhere that bananas help. I tried it and sure enough it helped. Now I eat a banana every night around 9 pm. I haven't had the reflux since!

hey all i take is the peppermint flavoured quick-eze or drink soem milk. believe it or not i have heard that even lemon juice may help as when you drink it, it becomes and anti acidic even though you think it is acidic confusing but i used it in my first trimester heartburn and it worked.

I have TERRIBLE acid relfux...my Dr told me to chew a pepcid complete 2 times a day. It has helped alot! Also when I've had my limit for the day I swallow a spoon full of mustard, sounds crazy but works great for me.

Hmmm...yea, he said I could take Maalox, Mylanta or Pepcid (other than Tums of course). He said the above would actually provide longer lasting relief than Tums. He recommened Mylanta because it also helps with constipation. I opted for the liquid version, supposedly it is gentler on the stomach. I don't know what drug classification it is and I tried to look it up after I read your message, but could not find the info. It does not say anything about pregnancy or nursing on the bottle either. I suppose it's okay as long as it is not taken excessively?

really? I was told to stay away from Mylanta and Pepto! Maybe you could ask the Pharmacist. They have categories for all of the OTC medications. You're safe with a level/category D, be cautious - maybe third trimester for level/category C, and DO NOT take level/category A & B.

Thanks so much everyone for your help! I will be trying all of the suggestions. I also talked with my doctor and we discussed different sleep positions, foods to avoid and to start taking Mylanta. Sounds like a plan!

I've had bad reflux. I've got the Doctor to prescribe me heartburn medication. I tried everything including OTC Pepcid, sleeping elevated, and rolaids. I was even told that cheese helps. I'm at 31 weeks and I've found that the reflux has dissipated slightly so the prescription heartburn medication helps for the most part. Stay away from chocolate, acids (tomatoes, oranges), and fried food. This will help!

My sister swore by having a hand full of raw almonds after each meal to help with here acid reflux. If it's really bad you can talk to your Dr about using Ranitidine (Zantac). It helps to reduce the amount of acid produced by your stomach. The research limited on pregnant women (as with most drugs due to ethics of testing on the pregnant). Animal studies have not shown any harmful effects to the fetus. So they are currently only recommending it's use in sever cases of acid reflux when tums don't work. So talk to your Dr about it's appropriateness for you.

A friend of mine had severe acid reflux during her last pregnancy. Tums worked for a little bit but she had to take so many the dr told her to stop. Her dr actually gave her a prescription for something that helped her a lot.

Have u tried sleeping even a little upright? You could place something at the head of your bed under the mattress or box spring to prop it up.
If it's not quite as bad try lying on your left side only. Your stomach curves down towards the left side of your body (when your laying down otherwise it'd be outwards to your left) I do this, it was uncomfortable at first not to move but I have a body pillow that goes between my legs at my knees that I keep straight, and comes up under my belly to support it as well so it's not pulling on my back. Only time I wake up now is when baby decides to give me a swift kick to the bladder. lol.
