Myself and my partner read the baby sign language book and have been trying to sign to our baby who is 5 months for about a month. They can apparently pick it up really quickly and it is a good way to communicate before they start to speak. Think he has signed dog so far.

I think it's a great idea to start signing to your baby. My grandmother is deaf and while i was growing up I didn't have anyone to teach me sign language so I have trouble communicating with my grandma. I'm making sure that doesn't happen with my children. I have started teaching my 3 yr old and she knows several signs so far. I haven't started yet on my 6 month old yet but I'm going to soon. Hopefully he catches on like his sister did.

I agree. My husband and I did alot of reading about it, and the younger you start the better chance you have of them picking it up faster. We started around 5 1/2 months as well, and mostly she laughs at us when we do it, but I she really watches so I think she will get it soon. I am really praying that she does, and that it helps as much as they say it does. I think it is a really great idea if it does work, and it doesn't hurt to try. It only helps their brains develope anyway.

I have read books, watched videos and learned many signs over the last few months. I've used them with my son as often as possible but still no "sign" of him reciprocating. I'm not discouraged as he's just 5 months but I hope he will catch on soon. He seems to be paying more attention as I sign common words to him suddenly so... here's hoping! :)

That's fantastic! Aside from assisting babies to communicate it also helps the bond between parent and child, frustration, encourages language development, and helps infant self esteem. I started signing with my little one at 3 months, he's now 5 1/2 months. He's not physically signing yet, but is starting to catch on. For example, when he becomes fussy, I sign milk and he stops fussing. Supposedly by 6 months of age infants can start to physically sign. I hope so :0)

Seth is 5 and a half months and although we heard that they start to understand after 6 months he has already signed 'dog' a couple of times-hoping he's a genius :) Thanks for the responses all.

Hi Clare, I think it would be fun to learn but I heard that babies don't really "get it" until about 7-8 months? We got into the baby language DVD before our girl was born (about their 5 words for things they need) and it saved us so much stress and crying so why not learn signs? Have to ever seen a DVD on signing???

I am planning to join a class in september with 2 friends called Sing & Sign, it sounds really good and apparently the ideal time to start is approx 6 months old. I have heard the same as you about it being really helpful with communication, it is supposed to ease the frustration of toddlers !!! Fingers crossed!!!
