Are you going to make your own baby food?

This is my third baby. With each one, I have become more and more conscious of the healthiness of their food. For example, for my two year old, I tried to buy Organic whenever possible. In fact, I do that for my whole family even now.

I am considering making my daughter's baby food. Has anyone ever done this? Do you have any tips or tricks or suggestions?

It seems I might be able to just use my regular blender instead of buying a specific babyfood maker... but perhaps it would be easier if I did. Should I buy the specific little containers the are for storing frozen food?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

I am getting ready to start making my own baby food too! I was given a baby food processor and a baby food cookbook. I am so encouraged by all of your posts about this! Thanks for the tips!

get the book "Super Baby Food". It is everything you need to know and more about making your own baby food, all kinds. tons of money-saving tips. age-appropriate foods, and recipes for mixtures as they age. it is a great book.

Here is a great website for anyone interested in making baby food: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/babymen...

My son loves the food I make. Although I disagree on boiling apples. I would recommend steaming them. It holds the nutritional value better. It isn't hard at all. I started with sweet potatoes and green beans. I now make peas, apples, plums, pears, bananas, carrots, squash and avocados.

yes!!! I just wrote a paper on organic food.

You are saving yourself a ton of money.

You are using less energy than buying it. (packing, trucking, you driving to the store)

You also will have to dispose of the jars and paper used to hold that food.

PLUS many of those companies line the jars with BP-A which studies have shown negatively affect on children.

You know exactly what goes into the food you are giving your baby.

Good job! Pesticides are very bad for humans.

I have two daughters, 22 months and 6 months. I made my own baby food for my first and plan to do so for my second as well. I usually take a large portion of a whole day and make several different kinds in bulk. I put it in muffin tins, cover w/ foil and put in the freezer overnight. The next day I can crack them out of the tins just like ice cubes. I put them in freezer bags and pull a days worth out each evening and keep those in the fridge. I always have store bought organic food for when I am in a pinch. Those containers come in very handy for when I need to take the food on the go. Maybe this method will be useful for you. good luck!

I started with store bought organic, but the range is not great, so will have to start making my own now. It's not hard at all and you can mix and match as you like.:)

You might also want to invest in a Baby Food Mill. I got one from Kidco, Inc. It's only about eleven dollars and works nicely to puree foods.

I decided to make our own baby food. We bought a hand pureer from targer (15.00) but really wasn't happy with the product. We bought the magic bullet, and have been using that to blend the vegetables after cooked, WORKS GREAT, comes with extra containers and lids. We also bought extra small tupper ware containers with lids, that are a great size for baby food. Get around 6 containers for around 2 bucks.

hope this helps.

Hello! Making your own baby food is a great Idea! Soo much healthier and cheaper and more convient too! I buy organic friut and vegitables, steam them and then blend them with a bit of water! I dont think its nessessary to buy a specific baby food blender, what ever works! To store I use glass baby food jars, which are awesome for re-using and easy to label. My daughter loves avocado and yams! Good luck!!

I make my daughter's baby food! Go for it! It's soo easy, cheap, and good for her. I have a food process, I chop and boil or steam the veggies/fruits. Then, blend to whatever consistency you desire. I have baby food trays (from Babies R Us) that you can freeze or I use regular ice cube trays if I make a huge batch. Each cube is about an ounce, and you can mix flavors and all. I've read the frozen cubes are good for about 5-6 weeks.

You could actually just use an ice cube tray to freeze individual servings, and put them in ziplocks after they're frozen!

We delay solids till kiddo is old enough to have simple table foods like mashed potatos and rice/ vegetables and we let her eat a few bites of what we have.

Before 1 year solids are such an insignificant part of babys diet, that it's more for the sensory value and exploring new textures than nutritional. They're still getting most of their values from formula/ breast milk.

It was great reading every ones responses. I am going to make my own baby food as well. I bought a food processor and love it. I also canned peaches and pears since they are in season now and plan to puree them later. I was told about freezing them in ice cube trays from a relative and it works great. It is great to know what exactly is in the food I give to my daughter.

For my son I cooked vegetable and meat porridge (potato, carrot, cabbage, zucchini and other mixes) every day. Smashed with blender. Taste is much better than those from the shops. Try to taste tinned stuff yourself, it's disgusting, just like pet's food. Do not inure your child to bad flavors from the first days :)

Not to mention how much money it saves!!! I've heard 3 months is how long that last. But my guy eats them much sooner than that.

With my first I didn't even try to make my own baby food, fearing that it would be too much work but with my second I gave it a shot. And I absolutely recommend it! I went out and bought a special baby food makers but ended up using my bender because it holds more and is much faster! I bought a book by Annabel Karmel and I really like it. I take about 30-45 min a week making a new food and it's very simple for me now. I bought some storage containers that are specifically made for it and they have lids to keep them sterile. So I make the food, put it in the containers, let it freeze and transfer them into freezer bags. I was worried about freezer burn but so far it has been an issue at all! Good luck to you! It really does feel great giving you baby the best.

I like the idea of bags. Do you still freeze in ice cube trays first then put in the bags?

Also, how long are they good for frozen?

I am actually considering doing this myself. I have done some reading and think it will be the best for my baby. I have a small processor that gets things pretty fine. I am going to try to use it. I was also planning on just using freezer bags to save on space. They are very easy to label and cheaper as well. It seems that it would be so much easier to handle than the little containers. I hope this helps.

I make my baby food, I find it cheaper and easy! I use an electric hand wand (not sure on proper name!) to puree the food and then freeze it in ice cube trays, when frozen I pop them out and store in the freezer in portion sizes in small zip lock bags. Blender will work fine!

Steam vegetables and add a bit of water when processing, boil apples etc, no extra water is needed tp puree apple and carrots. My daughter loves potato & carrot, banana (just mash up), apple & avacado (just mash avacado and blend in with cooked apple).

Hope this helps.
