Is it ok to put the crib bumpers back in?

My 18 week old keeps sticking his arms and legs through the crib rails while he sleeps. He is able to roll completely from his back to his tummy and back again. Would it be ok to put the crib bumpers back in?

I had a great idea for a new kind of "bumper" that attached to each rail independently. (not unlike the foam that protects copper piping) The foam could even come in different diameters to bridge the gap so limbs don't fit thru!! What a great idea huH?? Doesn't it FIGURE...it's PATENTED but NOBODY makes it. What's the point of that???

My daughter did that too. I didn't use a bumper, but was given a decorative material thingy (technical terms) that went around it. This was very thin so she could breathe through it if she rolled up against it, but enough to stop her sticking her limbs through it. Just make sure it's firm enought and anchored tightly to the crib so that there's no risk of the baby getting it in their mouth, or able to pull in down. I didn't use a bumper for suffocation risks. Maybe tied around the outside it may be ok?

wow i didnt even know that you were supposedto take the bumper out... MY so was always able to move his head around to where he wants it to be and rolls around his crib, I could only imagine the amount of injuries that would have happened without it. he sleeps with his back against the railings and faces the other side of the crib

I didn't take the bumpers out right away when my daughter was a newborn because she was sleeping in a positioner so she didn't move anywhere. When she started moving I took out the bumpers because of the fear of suffocating. But now she is rolling over to her tummy and back without any trouble, so I am thinking of putting them back in because of the feet going through the crib rails. I am pretty sure that if they are able to lift their head and move themselves around while sleeping it's not an issue.

Yes its ok! I never took mine out. I knew about it...but honestly with a baby positioner, I didn't see it happening. Now that he can roll over and play on his tummy, I feel that he is safer with the bumber. But I hear you are supposed to take the baby positioner out once then can roll over...I don't know why though.

i never took mine out. i use a sleep positioner which prevents her from moving around in the crib. if you're worried about your baby suffocating then i would use a mesh bumper or a sleep positioner.

I was seriously paranoid about SIDS (still am) and didn't want to have crib bumpers in there but my lil man moves ALOT and the arms/legs out of the crib can be bad if he jerks too quick. So I also got a breathable mesh style one that looks nice enough on the crib (not that important to me when it comes to safety but still a nice bonus) and although its enough to keep his body parts inside the crib walls, it's still light and easy to breath through even if your face is squished against it.
I bought it from Sears but they have them at Toys 'R' Us as well, jolly jumper makes them. Pretty cheap too.

I use a breathable bumper, got it from One Step Ahead. My older son once got stuck under his regualar bumper, but if no bumper his legs would get caught in his crib. So i go the breathable bumper and it was great

I put the crib bumpers in my daughters crib but I made really sure that they were snuggly tied so I wouldn't worry about them falling on her. she is about 18 weeks old. Your baby is too cute, by the way.

I didn't use one in the beginning, but now I do. Every night after she fell asleep I would swaddle her with a receiving blanket. One morning I noticed she went from sleeping straight to sideways - head touching the bed. She did it again the next morning and that's when I decided I didn't want her to keep banging her head. It was the best decision I ever made... now when I put her down at night or when she wakes up in the morning she's staring at the bumper. She loves the colours!

I never took mine out with either of my boys, it's loose enough that if my little one presses against it it'll slide so it doesn't smother, but I've never had any problems with it.

Hey I have had a bumper in my daughters crib ever since she was born, thank god for that because she started rolling a couple weeks ago and she rolls in her crib,if the bumper pad wasn't there she would have serious injuries.I don't see a problem with it whatsoever

We have a mesh bumper, so that the baby can breath through the holes if his face gets stuck against it while rolling from side to side... I highly recommend it. I think I got it on Bed bath and beyond..or was it Toys r' us...

I never too mine out. I was more nervous about him getting his hands or arms or legs stuck in the rails than I was about sticking his face in them.

Thank you for posting this! I have no answers but I was just talking to my husband about this last night! My son has been waking up more and whenever I go in, he has a limb hanging out somehow. I was planning on asking my pedi opinion since hes pretty laid back i figure if he says no its a for sure no. I will let you know!

I have read a lot about SIDS and I would NEVER EVER put a bumper pad in the crib. They might get uncomfortable with their leg sticking out but if they roll face first into the pad they could suffocate. I wouldn't take a chance with my child's life like that myself.
