My child is almost 16 months and he was diagnosed with a milk allergy at 1 month. I continued to breastfeed him and went without dairy until he was a year. It is easier than you think. A lot of products are dairy free. I loved to eat coconut milk ice cream. David can also have goat's milk instead of cow's milk. Ask your pediatrician about this, but most babies with the allergy are only allergic to the protein in cow's milk. Some restaurants are very nice about offering dairy free products as well. For example, the chicken at Bojangles is dairy free. Outback and Fatz are very willing to accommodate as well. We cook with Benecol instead of butter and it works really well. Oh and Oreos are dairy free, believe it or not. You will learn to quickly read labels and substitutes. Most children grow out of the allergy by age 2 or 3 also. Good luck!

My son and I have a milk allergy but it's really just to milk. We can have cheese and other light dairy items. I went to the health food store and asked them for recommendations on a milk subitute and they suggested coconut milk. My son loves it. We get the Original kind because I don't like the sweeten vanilla because of the added sugar. Reading labels is really important with feeding kids healthy choices and it helps us learn what is healthy for us too. Also there is the big bold print of most items that says Allergies: and lists milk, wheat, nuts etc. for easy reading. Remember if you can't read all the ingredients it's probably not the best thing to eat!

We discovered that my daughter had a milk allergy very early - 2 or 3 months. I had to eliminate all dairy from my diet so she didn't get it through my breastmilk. It was hard at first but now I'm used to it. She is still b/f so it's a bit easier b/c I don't have to worry about replacing the dairy at least for now. She eats lots of fruits and vegetables and some meat, rice, bread, crackers, hummus, pasta, eggs. She also is allergic to oats so that complicates things a bit but if you read labels you can generally find allergy-safe foods at natural food stores. Do you know if there are any other allergies?
