I have a similar situation. In the delivery room when I had my daughter who will be two in Sept, they had a team of doctors rush in while i was still delivering the placenta and nobody would tell me anything. Over the next couple months the doctors went back and forth and couldn't give me an answer on what my daughter had. Some of them were telling me it was an awful disease where she wouldn't live past five and others were telling me it wasn't a very big deal. We finally got her diagnosed correctly with congenital melanocytic nevus. It's basically a condition that has the appearance of a large, dark birthmark with many smaller birthmarks all over the body. However, complications can arise such as skin cancer, neurological problems, seizures, etc., so it's very important to get the mark removed to lower the risk. My daughter had her first surgery when she was five months old, one in June, and will have her next and hopefully last in August. Then she will continue on with dermatologists and neurologists. I understand how it is to worry even though your child is generally healthy. Anytime you want to talk you can message me :) Good luck with everything with your son.
