My little princess is on formula and doing pretty well on it except that we don't have enough BM's. The doctor told me to use karo syrup in her bottle which helps but I'm worried that I'm using it too much. If I don't use it then she barely does anything. I have started her on oatmeal cereal and she loves it but I'm afraid it will cause even more constipation. Help!!! Does anyone know any tricks that will help me out?

Peaches are also a natural laxative and they are safe to give before 6 mos. They work just as well as prunes!

Quoting Brynne:

Not that we moms would care to do this, but hey, you do what you have to do when you're desperate.... I haven't had to do it, but was told that you can stimulate a BM by gently applying a rectal thermometer inside the bum. A friend of mine said she had to try it and it worked immediately, so watch out!

I had to do this for my daughter because I had eaten too much chocolate.  It is not fun doing it at all and I wouldn't recommend doing it this way for an extended period of time.

My son, Devin, is a once a week pooper. We really thought that this could potentially be a huge problem, but based on the doctor's advice and what my husband and I read, as long as a breast-fed baby urinates frequently, seems happy, comfortable, and healthy he should be fine. Before we learned this, we did feed him a couple tablespoons of prune juice to coax him into pooping. Maybe it worked and maybe it was just coincidence, but he pooped about 24 hours after he drank the juice. We really don't stress about it so much now and just know he'll poop when he's ready. Since the research I'd read was based on breast-fed babies, I am not sure if the same applies to formula fed babies, but maybe the little bit of prune juice would be helpful. I am all for trying natural remedies first over the medicinal ones. Good luck!

My little girl goes to the chiropractor. At first it was for her coliciness, but now for mild acid reflux and constipation. It has helped her a lot. I agree on avoiding carrots, I forgot about them and it backed her up so bad. I skipped rice cereal due to the constipation issue, and just started her on oatmeal. So far she seems to be doing okay with all the other veggies. She is also on Sensitive Similac for her formula. I have tried the regular similac a couple times and everytime it gives her bad gas problems and constipation isssues.

Check out my website, www.febybottles.com. My baby was bottle fed from day one and I have tons of information about the ups and downs of bottle feeding on the website. You'll have to look through the archives, but it's all there--"I love you" massage can help, as can karo syrup or even a little apple juice. Check out the post titled "Poor Miss Boo." I hope it helps!!

My Dr said to mix 1/2 prune juice 1/2 water and that should do the trick!

Oh yeah, the juice worked but you didn't tell me how AWFUL it would smell!!! Lol! It was terrible! I'm thrilled that it worked though. Thanks a million times.

I gave her 2 oz. of apple / prune juice yesterday at lunch and nothing has happened yet but I probably didn't give her enough. She seemed to really like it though, then again I think she would eat gasoline if I put it in a bottle. She is a little piggy-wiggy!! I will give her some more this morning and let you know how she does. Thanks again for all the comments.

yeah the oatmeal will probably constipate her alittle more. You can use a about 2 teaspoons of karo and it won't bother her. Give her more vegetables like green beans, peas, carrots, and fruit like applesauce or apple juice. I gave my 5mth 4oz of apple juice and he went with ease. You can never go wrong with vegetables and fruit plus it' s healthy for them. i use all of these through out his diet regularly because it's so important to me for him to have a bm. I don't want him to feel miserable.

Oh Brynne, you lucky mum, here in france they make you take rectal temperature after every nappy change for 2 days after the birth and once a day for the rest of the stay at the clinic. I have to say this little trick does work, works for suppositories too, as soon as i'd start putting one in he'd do a poop. And yes the prunes are excellent, over here you can get apple and prune puree too which Maxence loves, as soon as i see he's getting a bit hard i give him that for his pudding and it works a treat

Thanks a million! I'm going to try the prune juice in the morning. Maybe this will do the trick.

oh I've have the same problem. My Dr also said karo syrup. I don't think you can do it too much, worst that could happen would be that she starts to get chubby. I've got my 5 month sweety on cereals and yes this can also cause constipation. I give her prunes (stage one) sometimes mixed in the formula and sometimes mixed in just water. If you mix it with about 2 oz of either liquid it will make about 4oz total. the more liquid the thinner it'll be. Gerber also has a juice that is prunes and apples, I'm getting ready to try this so that I don't have to mix it anymore. Prunes are the healthy way to go about it and may not get your baby hooked on wanting everything sweetened. I know this keeps my girl regular and she loves it, but it doesn't give her diarreha either. Hope this helps.

even if she is doing well on her formula it could be the formula that is constipating her, we changed formula over six times and have now finished up giving our five month old regular cow's milk mixed with water. I personally don't like giving caro syrup or suppositories on a regular basis, it's not actually solving the cause of the problem. Personally i used a little prune juice to ease Maxence, the poor mite actually went for nearly three weeks without doing a poop if i didn't put in a glycerin suppository so i really do feel for you. Only other advice is when you start weaning avoid carrots and banana, they can constipate
