I'm still breastfeeding mostly, and trying to start on solids too. I'm not sure what is the next step after 1st foods...I've read about some of the babies this age eating garlic bread, and potatoes...Savanna has only had bananas, apples, pears, squash and peas. Obviously, this is my first child, so I'm looking for advice, suggestions... Thanks!

Here are some other good first foods you can add:

Sweet potato

avocado

pumpkin

bocolli

cauliflower

carrot

peaches

paw paw

zucchini

eggplant

finger foods - grated cheese, dried bread (dry out in microwave), any steamed vegies (so they are soft) cut into little pieces.

At this age I have been told we can also introduce meat, start with chicken and white meats, even white fish and then try red meat.

My daughter hates baby food. I talked to her pediatrician about it at her 9 month check up this week and he said they lifted a lot of the restrictions on table foods that you can give. Since there's no history of allergies in my family she can have pretty much anything except honey (because of the risk of botulism). So I've been feeding her the same things that we eat for supper - just cut up really small. Chicken is one of her favorite foods! Her main source of nutrition is still breast milk right now though.

It all depends on your baby. My son is almost ten months and REFUSES to eat anything that is pureed, he must be able to chew it. LOL. If you think she is ready to be introduced to more things than go ahead, it definitely wont hurt. Just stay away from egg whites, fish, nuts, and honey until after a year of age, as those are the foods that most babies have severe allergic reactions to. Good Luck!

How old is your Bubba? (Oh she is 9months - just looked) I would just continue to introduce other foods. More vegies, some meat, baby yoghurt. There are lots of great books which help with what to introduce when. Because she has passed the stage where you should gradually introduce things I would (if no history of allergies) start lots. My little man in 9mths 3 weeks and pretty much eats what we eat. Weetbix or baby cereal and puree fruit or banana for breakfast. Meat (chicken / beef / lamb / fish) and vegies (all - zuchini / corn / carrot / squash / peas / beans...) I still puree but not as finely now for lunch.Baby yoghurt or custard after lunch. Finger foods for arvo tea (mini muffins / pancakes / ham / cheese / hard boiled eggs / rice cakes with cream cheese or avacado / fruit peices etc) then vegies and rice / pasta / cous cous etc for tea He is still having 4 breast feeds a day. There are also many websites which have sample menus you can look at. Its all about gradually introducing new foods and textures. Good luck with it.

My daughter will be 10 months in a few days and she refuses to eat baby food. She started eating abby food at 6 months and table food around 7 or 8 months. Now she will only eat fruit baby food. She loves mac & cheese, bread, muffins, chicken, greenbeans, potatos. She even likes steak that I cut into tiny pieces for her, of course she has 6 teeth so it might be a little easier for her than others that don't have as many teeth. But other than the foods to stay away from because of allergy reasons, she can have anything you're eating as long as it's small pieces and soft enough for her to chew. If she doesn't like something at first, keep trying. Sometimes it takes a few times for them to get used to something new.

My daughter is 9 months almost 10 in 3 days she eats everything from vegetables, fruits, chicken, meat, cheese, bread, pasta even lobster raviolis. She only eats table food she never like baby food I use to make her baby food. You should see how she bites everything to small pieces so she can eat it. I mean she eats everything!

Bella eats everything but baby food. We started cereal and first foods at 4 months and were on to 2nd foods within 6 weeks. She went right to 3rd foods two weeks later at 6 months. she loves to hold her food to eat it, so i cut up whatever she eats into 1-2 inch long strips that are only about 1/4 -1/2 inch wide. i got the book "Cooking for Baby" from William Sonoma. Once Bella tasted "real" food she's refused any jarred baby food. She does like the pasta pick-ups however. Her absolute favorite is YoBaby yogurt. Our doctor is slightly concerned that she won't eat purees, since she only has two teeth, but as long as she doesn't choke and keeps up with the chewing action, he said she should be fine.

I was hesitant just like yourself. I have been feeding my baby table food since she turned 7 months. Her favorite meals to eat are chicken soup, beef stew, pasta and most of her fruits and vegetables. Just started her on yogurt, loves it!!! (baby gerber kind) I feed her what we eat and have not had a problem so far. My advice try different fresh meals, new vegetables and new fruits. Check out websites online and books.

Mine is eating all table food. Oh my gosh!!! Your 9mo hasn't started solids yet?? She is 9mo? Is she gaining weight well? Does she have teeth? Mine eats EVERYTHING. They can start mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, crackers, breads, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese. No shellfish or peanuts until I think now it's 3 or 4. I know you're a new mommy so I don't mean to sound harsh, I'm just shocked that her Ped never said these things to you.

One thing that breast milk lacks is iron and after 6months of age they are not receiving enough iron from breast milk alone and have used all their stores so it is important to introduce meat (and or other forms of iron rich foods - leafy green vegie etc).
