what time does your 16 month old go to bed at night?

Hi, I am realising that we are probably putting our 16 month old daughter to bed too late. So she is not getting the proper amount of sleep and being tired is making her a very cranky baby! We put her to bed at 8:00pm and she will sleep until 7:30am most days. She will then go for a nap around 1:00pm for about 2 - 21/2 hrs in the afternoon. I am concerned she is not getting enough sleep. How much sleep does your baby get?

Thanks
Kayla

I don't think that is too late our daughter goes to bed around 7:30pm sometimes later and wakes up around 6:30am.

My son (17mo on 8-9-10) goes to bed anytime between 8-9pm and wakes up around 7:30am everyday. He takes a nap around 10:30am for about 2 hrs, then another nap around 4pm for another 2 hrs. That seems to be his schedule for the past couple of months (he's been sleeping a little big longer the past 2 weeks b/c he's getting his molars).

But I just try and look for signs that he's tired; grabs "blankie" and lies down on floor and sucks his thumb, throws temper tantrums, tells me "night-night", and tells me "mommy, please, up, hold".

And he'll let me know when he gets up, he starts screaming for me to get him out.

Both my kids go to bed between 7:00 - 7:30 most days and usually have to be woken up at 7:30 to get ready for the day then they take a nap at daycare around 1:00 for about 2-2 1/2 hours... my daughter who is 2 doesn't always nap though and they both seem just fine.

That actually sounds like the right amount of sleep. Perhaps she isn't ready to be on one nap a day? You could try putting her down earlier for her nap (my son goes down at 12-12:30) which might move her bedtime back a half hour or so. Usually 7-7:30 is recommended for children this age, although my son usually doesn't go down until nearly 8:00.

ive been having trouble with bed time with my 16 month son and he went to bed last night after his shower with no fuss at 930. i normally try and put him down between 7-8 but takes at least half hour. so was wondering if u all thought that was to late? he has been in a big boy bed over a week now and thats when the trouble started. i was thinking if i can get him to go down easy at 930 for a while and he is use to the bed i might be able to bring back his bed time down the track

my daughter had been going to bed between 9:30-11 sleep till 7ish then nap around 2. But she has decided that she won't sleep until between 1am and 430am and will wake up between 8am and 2pm. She doesn't realy take naps anymore. I don't know what started this routine, and I can't seem to break her of it. My husband and I both have sleep disorders, mine started before grade school, so I am hoping she didn't inherit one of them from us. Hopefully it is just a phase and she will start sleeping in her bed again at a decent time. At this age when they are tired they will sleep, hungry they will eat, etc. so watch for their signs, and do what you feel is right.

My daughter is almost 17 months. She goes to sleep at 7pm every night, and sometimes it takes her up to 45 minutes to fall asleep. She's awake between 6-6:30am every day. She still takes two naps at the moment. At 8:30am, she goes down for a 2 hour nap. And then at 3:30 she goes down for another 1-1.5 hour nap.

Also- if its been a hectic day or she's too overwhelmed, my daughter gets cranky, or if she wakes up before she's actually ready to and then forget it- she's cranky all day! Make sure she's actually ready to be awake when you get her up. We usually leave our daughter in her crib until she decides she's ready, and she'll ask politely to get down. Remember, if you start the day off bad- it will probably be a rough day, at least until after naptime!

That sounds good to me. My daughter goes to bed usually around 8 but occasionally earlier or later, wakes around 7:30 and naps once around noon, right after lunch, for an hour or more. If she's tired that day, she takes a long nap or asks to go "na-nite" a little early. Just look for signs of being tired, like cranky, crying and not using words, rubbing their eyes a lot, getting stumbly, etc. If you don't see any of those, then she's probably fine =]

7:30-8pm: Bedtime
7-7:30am: Wakes Up
10am-12pm: Nap
3:30-5pm: Nap

Every little one is different. Some need 2 naps at this age and others will only need 1. If she seems cranky, put her back on a 2 nap a day routine. That really should help.

I put 16 month old lil man in his baby bed at 8:30. He normally falls asleep shortly after & sleeps until about 6:30 when I have to wake him up so I can go to work. He's usually not cranky or anything. But then he takes a nap for about 2-3 hours around 12:00 or 1:00. On the weekends, I let him sleep a little bit longer but he normally wakes up on his own by at least 9:30, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. :) So our kids get about the same amount of sleep.

I put our daughter to bed by 7:30 or 8:00. She then wakes up about 7:00 or 7:30. She takes two naps throughout the day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. Her naps are about two hours long.

She definitely takes after me.. and loves sleeping!!

I don't think you should be too concerned unless she is crabby throughout the day.

My daughter goes to bed around 7-7.30pm 'most' nights and then wakes up at 5.30-6am.... she hardly ever naps during the day.....

Your daughter will sleep if she needs more! As long as you aren't waking her from her sleep (unless you absolutely HAVE to)...

If my daughter is really tired, she has a nap around 10am, or goes to sleep around 5.30-6pm..... then sometimes she stays up til 8.....

Your daughter sounds like she is getting plenty of sleep, and as they get older they sleep less!

My 17 mo old just dropped his nap!!:( Very upsetting- but he has a lot of energy and has never needed a lot of sleep. If he takes a 2 hr nap, he will go to bed between 8:30 and 9 pm (our doctor confirmed that they recommend that time for bed for kids his age). He gets up by 7:30 am or earlier. I am hoping that without a nap, he will be in bed at least by 8 pm or earlier:)!! Every baby is different and some may need more sleep than others. Good luck! Sounds like you are doing a great job!!

Sounds perfect to me that's more or less what my daughter sleeps. The time they go to bed is not important, what's important is how many hours they sleep. I put my children to bed around 8,30 and they sleep though till about 7.30. (I don't put them to bed at 7pm because I am not good at 6am wake up calls!)

Also I should add that most babies transition from 2 naps to 1 nap during the day between 12 to 18 months. During the transition phase there is a few months were some days they need still need two naps. It is possible that she still sometimes needs a 1 hour nap at about 10am.

The amount of sleep your baby is getting is normal. Most babies of her age go to bed at 7pm, get up at 6am and have one 2-2.5 hour nap at 12 or 1pm. Your baby is perfectly normal. You can try putting her to bed an hour earlier if you feel it would help.

my daughter gets ready for bed at 8, watches 1 wonder pets episode and goes to bed (between 8:15 and 8:20). she gets up between 7 & 8. naps between 10 & 12, and then between 2 & 4. she doesn't always sleep the entire time, but she is in her room having quiet time, either playing with stuffed animals or looking at books. she was in a toddler bed, now mattress on floor, so she can get out of bed when she wants, but her door is closed. she seems pretty happy now. she wasn't sleeping but 2 hours every 6 hours round the clock a few weeks ago. once we moved her mattress to the floor, she's been sleeping mostly thru the night.

My 17 mo. old goes to bed at 6:30 and gets up anywhere between 6:30 (weekdays) and 8:00 (weekends). He takes one nap a day at daycare during the week, then on the weekends 2 naps of one to two hours. I have read and followed the advice in the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" since mine was born and found it VERY helpful in making sure my little guy gets enough sleep. The best advice was putting him down to nap or bed before he gets cranky and overtired, even though he may not appear "tired." I also read an article that described the sleep needs of this age range as about 12-14 hours a day total.

Our daughter has always gone to bed at 8pm. Sometimes a little later, sometimes a little ealier depending on what we are doing and how much of a nap she had. But the routine is usualy up around 8:30 or 9:30am, nap at 1pm usually for a couple of hours, and supper, bath, story, bed at 8pm. That seems to be plenty of sleep for her unless she doesn't take a proper nap. She has days where she won't take a nap or at least not a good one, and then she is a little cranky, but generally always goes to bed fine. Hope this helps.

My 16 month old son goes to sleep at 8pm as well. During the week he often wakes up around 6:30, but if not we wake him at 6:45. On weekends it varies. The last 2 Friday's he's slept till 10, but then on Sat/Sun he's up around 6:30-7. At day care he normally takes 2 naps - between 3-4 hrs total. At home, he will only take one nap for us on most days. His total nap time on a long day is 3 hours, but more often 2. Sometimes I can tell he need the 2 nap but he refuses but for the most part he's fine. When he gets really cranky we know he needs more sleep, but usually he's fine. When does she seem cranky? Is it close to bed time/nap time. If so, that's actually a good indication that you're getting her to bed when she needs it. If not, you could attempt getting her down for a morning and afternoon nap but I know how difficult that can be.

[deleted account]

I don't think that's too late at all! Our DD used to go down around 8:30, but since we're doing more with family mealtimes (which means waiting until Mommy comes home from work), it's often not until 9:30. She's been getting clearer and clearer about letting us know when she's ready - after her bath, when she's in jammies and downstairs for one last book and one last snuggle, she'll grab her blankie, wave good-night, and head to the stairs to let us know it's bedtime. She does the same at naptimes - it's really precious! She usually gets about 9-10 hours at night, then 2 naps during the day, usually 1.5 to 2 hours each. She's never been a baby who slept much, so as long as she seems OK with her 12-13 hours spread across the day, we're fine with it. She's a super-active little one, and has always fussed when she's falling asleep - she doesn't like to miss out on the action!

kai goes to bed at 6.00pm , he then sleeps until between 6.00-6.30 am...once he is awake i leave him in bed for prob another 15 or 20 mins so i can have a shower before i get him (he just plays with his blankie and talks) ...and then (strangely!) he is tired and ready for a nap again between 9.00 and 10.00 am...he naps then for between 2 and 3 hours...kai is a fantastic sleeper! we are very lucky!

Mine sleeps about that much as well. But he does good. He would love to have another nap during the day, but since he has been in daycare, they only do one. If she's that tired, put her down for another nap. If that doesn't work, try earlier bedtime. It's about her schedule and what she needs right now. She'll need less as she gets older, but maybe not yet. Good luck.
