When did your baby start self feeding with a spoon? My 1 year old switches between spoon and hand.

I'm not sure whether or not I should be persistent with the spoon feeding yet. She does a good job with it but still makes a mess. She uses both a spoon and her hand, hands mostly! When are they really ready for self feeding with a utensil? Do I let her keep practicing with it, mess and all?

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

Laura, a fork? Aren't you worried he will poke himself in the face or the eye??? I could garentee you that if I gave my 13 month old a fork he WOULD hurt himself with it. But your child may be more coordinated than mine.

Anyway back to the question...I honestly can't remember how I did it with my now 9 year old so I am wondering about this myself. If I let him use a spoon there is a 20 minute cleanup afterwards...lol...I think it's important to let them self feed but not sure if now is a good time. I would get on the internet and do some research on this. I think that's what I will do.

I have had more success with a fork, because he can spear the food and it doesn't slide off. He is learning to spear it himself now, we have been doing this for a couple of months. I started with the fork because my son outright refused anything that came at him on a spoon. Keep practicing and she will improve.
