Baby Not Eating Finger Foods

I was curious if anyone else is having the same issue I am having. My son will be 8 months old on Monday and already has six teeth. I have been feeding him solids since he was 4 months, however, I have yet to be able to progress. I have tried Mum Mum (crackers), yogurt edibles, gold fish, cheerios, french fries, you name it. He will put any toy in his mouth but you give him a snack and he will gage once it hits his tongue. If I try to feed it to him its even worse. I'm positive this will pass in time but I have never seen a baby react this way and wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this.

I wouldn't worry about it yet, gagging is a babys natural reaction to prevent choking. My daughter turned 8 months yesterday she eats some finger foods but it took alot to get her were shes at now. Everyday I would give her some & if she put it in her mouth i would show her how to chew & she would watch me, i always go "yummmm" while im doing it lol it seems to keep her interested

My son was 8 months Tuesday..and he is the same way...Frustrating I find, my daugther who is now 5 was not like this at all... Time and patience I guess.

my daughter does like mum mums but hates minced food, she does the gag thing, she only has 2 teeth so I'm not pushing it, he will try your finger food when he is ready, he is only 8months if he was 15 months then I would start to panic..:-)

I highly recommend checking out the Baby Led Weaning book by Gil Rapley. Even if you don't plan on using her approach to feeding it has good info on how babies eat and the developmental processes they go through, including explaining how the gag reflex works and adapts in babies.

We have been trying her approach feeding my daughter and it had been very frustrating as she does the same thing - puts everything in her mouth, except food. She is just now starting to get the hang of it and eating a little bit on her own. It can take some time, and the gagging can be disturbing but its their way of learning how much they can eat safely.

My son used to do this when he was this age, he is now 2 1/2 yrs old. By the time he was a year old he had 15 teeth! I started off with small pieces of bananas since he already new the taste of them just so he could get used to the new texture. He would gag and choke all of the time too. He was about 9mos old before he was able to really eat SOFT foods (noodles, bananas, pears) and cereal like Kix and Cheerios. My daughter will be 8 mos tomorrow and is just starting to eat Kix cereal but will really work it around her mouth as she only has 2 teeth.
