holding hands when out walking

my daughter will stop dead in her tracks and crouch to the ground when she doesnt want to hold a persons hand...as much as i was against the "kiddie leash" we bought one for 10 dollars at walmart. its a light tan puppy dog harness with short leash. *sighs* i hate the thought of it but for us its the only way. if she wont hold our hand and throws a fit if she sits in the cart to long then we let her walk with the lease. i try to remind myself that its like the wrist cuffs my mom had when i was a little girl.

the wrist cuff was velcro band that went on the child and one on the parent and it was connected by a curly cord. ( kind of like the cord you would see on an old rotery phone).

except this is a back pack that is a stuffed animal wiht a pouch and its straps go all the way around and clip and the tail of the animal is the leash.

there are no qualms from either out little one or us and she will walk with us using it. i think her arm must get tired from reaching up to hold on to mommy and daddy and thats where is stems from. yeah soem times we get a few stares here and there for using it. but its usually from those with out children that have the bad opinions about kid leashes.
i used to swear they were for lazy parents. no they are not they are for uncooperative walking children.

My son was like that too when he was about 9 months old, he would pull his hand away and everybody else would give into him and let him do whatever an it made me mad and so I made it to the point where he couldn't pull my hand away and if he threw a tantrum he went right in the stroller. Now that he is 13 months he walks with me perfectly. Just have to be consistent.

my son doesnt hold hands either...i get the odd occasion when he will but in shops its rare so for now it is stroller unless the area is secure and im going to be in there for a lil bit then i let him walk around.i think he is still a bit young and over excited.

My 14 month old doesn't want to hold hands either :(

We bought the animal back pack leash thing. She isn't a huge fan, but I know she is safe. We live in a co-op, so if we are just walking around there, we can just let her go. But, anywhere else, it is stroller or leash thing :)

I would suggest keeping her in the stroller until such time as she will hold your hand or keep trying with her, every time she sits on the floor and screams put her in the stroller, she will soon get the idea that if she wants to walk she needs to hold your hand.

If you are concerned about safety Babies r Us and i believe target have these cute little animal "backpacks" that are a harness for the child with a (and i hate to say it becasue a lot of people think its awful, but come on, they are safe and its not in the least harmful!) Leash on it so you can let them walk on their own but still keep ahold of them.

My 14 month old son will not hold my hand either, but I think he's just so excited. I'm sure she'll start holding your hand in a short time.

My 2yr 6 month daughter has never really liked holding hands so we either just use buggy/pushchair or we play a game of walking slowly then run then stop then skipping then holding hands and spinning, by this time shes had fun seems to then want to hold my hand until i start the game again

see my lil one has been walking since she was 9months at first we keept her in the pram or shopping trolly but now she just throws a fit is she isnt walking yet she wont hold my hand lol she has a right lil temper

My 14 month old won't hold hand either. She starts pulling away and getting mad right away. So, if we are out she is either in the stroller, cart, being held or in the carrier. She is safe, content and not throwing a fit.

lol my 14 mth old does the same thing-she refuses to hold my hand and will shake it off and cry. When we go out she is always in stroller/shopping cart/carrier unless there is a safe place I designate for her to wander around in. She will not walk beside or follow me consistently- I think she is too young still.
