What do you do for a baby with a stuffed nose?

He started out with his first ear infection earlier this month. Now he has a cold and has already done the mucus vomit from post-nasal drip.

I'd like any ideas you may have to help him.

What we're doing so far is:
1) giving him probiotics twice a day in a bottle.

2) use the Graco Nasal Clear Nasal Aspirator given to me by a friend

3) a nurse suggested lifting one side of his mattress or sleep with him on my chest sitting on a recliner so that he drains. We don't have one so we angled his mattress a bit.

My wee girl is just on the otherside of her first cold and was very snotty. I put my pillow underneath the head of her mattress. It kind of helped, when she didnt wriggle to the other end of the bed. Another helpful thing was to put a spoonful vicks vapour rub / menthol rub in boiled water and either next to or underneath her bed. It fills the room with the vapour in order to try and help them breath. I was also told to rub some on the soles of her feet and cover with socks when she went to bed, (seems like some of you have had the same idea!) which helped with her cough. We did the nasal aspirator too. I will say, my sons first cold, we actually took his pram into the bedroom and he slept in there one night, as it was a safe place for him to sleep almost sitting up. A bouncy chair might be able to offer this too. I know its not too good for them to spend ages in such a position, but for just a night to help him breathe and sleep might be helpful.

Good luck!

Ha! I thought I was the only mom crazy enough to vapo rub my child's feet. It works like a charm though! Also a little bit of lemon in their juice or water can thin out the mucus.

If you are breastfeeding you can use breastmilk instead of saline- gives baby more antibodies. I bought a nasal spray that allowed me to put my breastmilk in the small container and it creates a light mist. I got it from walgreens. When giving your little one a bath johnson and Johnson brand vapor bubble bath will help open airway passages.

My baby is just getting over the same thing. We are using saline nasal spray, frequent breastfeedings and as for sleeping, I prop like 3 pillows behing my back and let he rsleep on my chest as we do not have a recliner either. Oh and we have a humidifier in her room.

For my little ones I give them a shower for as long as possible, elevate the side of their bed that their head rests on (though at this age mine are rolling all over the place) and I use a vaporizer all night and during naptimes. If you can't get one they also have menthol plug-ins that work similarly and do help as well, the brand we have is Vicks

They also make a baby vicks vaporub and a menthol baby bath wash that helps them in the tub.

If you can, get a vaporizer for his room. We had to get one for my daughter as she has had a lot of problems the last couple of months. The steam from the shower is basically the same idea, but since the weather is worse just before dawn I suggest a vaporizer in the his room. It has made all the difference for my little one.

I was going to suggest using the Nasal Aspirator but you have tried that! Do you breast feed? If so, breast feeding your baby a little more often should help your baby from the Anti-Bodies. If not, have you consulted a doctor about this? They may suggest other nasal spray which could work? Sorry if this isn't much help.

Put him in a baby seat or something he is comfortable in, place it on the floor in the bathroom and run the shower nice and hot steam will help clear his sinuses and help him sweat it out just make sure he stays hydrated
