I live on ludwig and have a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath and it's about 1475 sqft. We are kind of cramped too but we have oversized furniture. 2 bedrooms are good sized and the third is tiny a twin size bed or a full at best would fit there with a dresser. We use it as an office and it's cramped with the desk and file cabinet we have. I haven't seen the 4 bedrooms though. It really depends on which housing area you live in. The new houses are the ones on upshur and ludwig. The rest are older homes. The school is 29 palms elem for the kids and they take the bus. Ocotillo is a good neighborhood we have a small pool, gym, rec center and 7 day store. If you are a golfer the course is 2 minutes away. The only issue I have is we are farther away from mainside so going to the commissary, PX, hospital or CDC's is a little bit of a ride.

We live in Joe Davis. It was our only option for base housing at the time and we didn't want to live out in town and pay the utilities! I don't mind it. It is small and there is no garage. That being said it is fine for our family of four and a dog. Neighbors are nice and everyone minds their own buisness (at least where I am ) which I really like. I also realize this was a few weeks ago so you probablly already moved in lol

Hello, my husband and I just arrived here in Twentynine palms. I was curious to know if anybody lives in Joe Davis community off base? There is a three bed room there that is available in a few weeks, so I wanted to see what people think about it?

Erica...We live in Yucca Valley right now but will be moving on base in a couple of weeks. The rentals in 29 are ridiculous for what you get. You will pay 10% more if you need a month to month. We live in a 3bed 2bath and it's small for us but nice. It is a whole lot cheaper and the landlord is nice. He prefers a 6 month lease but he did a month to month for us. :) I can give you his info if you are interested. My email is ape92102@yahoo.com.

If you do have to live off base temporarily while you wait and already on the wait list they will come and repack you and move you on base as a courtesy free of charge and there are a lot of month to month rentals here so you don't have to worry about leases

Marsha, thanks for the details. I contacted housing and the wait is 3-5 months! Ugh, I may end up living off-base after all :-/

We recently moved to 29 (end of May). Housing just called yesterday to offer us a house in Ocotillo. Can anyone tell me about this community and the elementary school? The houses look small from the outside so we are a little worried that we are going to be cramped. We are a family of 4, but we have a lot of stuff. We can't view the inside until the 31st. Can anyone send some pics please. Thank you!!!

Vista Del Sol is broken into 2 areas, Aztec and Joe Davis. Joe Davis is directly across the street from lucky park, 29 elementary and 29 jr high. Aztec is about half a block farther up the street. We lived in Joe Davis last time we were here and it was nice. They didn't have the security gates that they have now. Last time I drove by there it wasn't manned but had a keypad. I heard that they are either putting in a pool for each of the housing areas, Aztec and Joe Davis or working a free pass deal with lucky park pool for the residents. Now they are more secure and it would give you a good compromise. You're not on base but still close enough to the Condor gate just 5 min. Plus depending on how old your kids are you have 29 Elem and the Jr high right across the street which are good. I have done over 80 practicum hours for school at the jr high and 29 elem and the teachers I've worked with are really good. You don't get a back yard with either of these housing areas though just a concrete patio with a little dirt strip but you can have pets. Only one dog though. When I was in Joe Davis the neighbors were pretty tight and friendly it was a good place.

@Amanda: you've got mail lol

@Marsha: Thanks for the reply. We weren't expecting the BAH to drop since the cost of living is higher in California, but we'll have to plan accordingly. I was asking Amanda if she knows anything about Vista del Sol housing, and maybe you can also shed some light on that. My husband isn't totally sold on living on base and we're thinking that might be a compromise for us both. He's a Sgt so I've been looking at different websites to figure out what type of housing we would be eligible for.
It sounds like you may be a bit out of the way, but at least being on base is a safer and convenient option. I would definitely need some civilization, so trips to Palm Springs would be a must! lol :)

Amanda is right. It makes more sense financially to be on base unless you both have jobs because of the utilities especially in the summer and you don't get a lot of bah. Then you have the offenders. You want to check your apt/house on the registry before signing anything. On base especially the housing by the commissary is best. You should have seen it the first 3 times we were stationed here before the base housing revamping, before they tore down the original marine palms and built Ocotillo heights up. I am by the golf course and it was my husbands choice because I wasn't in Cali yet when he got the house. He's a golfer so he choice Ocotillo heights. They are nice but I am so far away from everything. Convenient for him as he works @ MCCES and is a golf nut so the 2 mi round trip to work and golf 2 min away is good. I would go on base because you have much more support and everything you need is here. Just make sure you go down the hill or up to big bear on weekends to get some civilization and retail therapy :)

Erica please feel free to email me AmandaEbryant@yahoo.com. We just moved here a couple weeks ago, actually still in a hotel. I will say that in my opinion living off base is NOT an option. Some bases it's ok but there is really a benefit to living ON base in this case. There are alot of family things to do on base here because there is nothing in town. Living in Yucca is ok I suppose but you are so far away (roughtly 30 miles) from any support you could have from your military peers. I understand how some people think that they can avoid "drama" by living off base but this is the type of base where you would really benefit, at least in my 12yrs experience, by living on base. Also, housing allowance is somewhat low for the area, yeah you can rent for about 800-900 a month but you are left with almost nothing to help with utilities so then you are left in a financial hole, and it's very hard to find a place where you feel safe out in town. My husband is a Staff Sgt and we have 2 kids and our housing allowance would barely help with utilities. The housing here is nice and close to everything on base. If you email me I will give you my cell and you can ask me anything anytime, since i'm right here I can answer you right away or send you pictures. We came from Lejeune and YES it is a major culture shock, Hope you like the color brown, hahaha..............and I can also mail you anything you may need via snail mail anytime.

Hi ladies! My husband and I are PCSing to 29 from MCAS Beaufort at the end of Sept 2012. Any advice on where to live and what to expect? I've never been to Cali and I hear 29 can be a bit of a culture shock at first lol. I've also heard that living off-base isn't the safest option (sex offenders?? yikes!). My husband would rather off-base but my research (aka google) tells me that on-base housing would be better for families with children. Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

There's not a lot of options for apartments in town but Smoke Tree are the absolute nicest apartments here. We were going to move there when I was living part time in AZ for school.

We have our stuff in storage so we just have clothes but the apartments we looked at today were really nice . Smoke Tree Villas. We still don't know what we are going to do, so far it's the Sleepy Tortise while we look. We will survive I suppose, it's only temporary wherever we end up lol.

Desert Knoll is good if you can find a rental. There is another area turtle rock and another set of new houses across from stater bros behind the hotel that looks pretty nice and well kept. Same think on Florida drive. Just about everyone I know lives on base or down the hill. We don't like apartments because we have a dog and so much stuff. We need the sq footage and don't want to get a storage unit so personally and would go for a house. There are some great neighborhoods here.

I hope you find something good that suits you and your family. There are some good places out in town just depends on your lifestyle and how close to "civilization" you want to be and how far you are willing to have the DH drive to/from work. If you have any questions shoot me a msg. I've been here off and on for six years this is our third time being stationed here.

My husband is with MCCES C co in maintenance. The Ocotillo heights newer houses are good. Ours is 3/2.5 1400sqft but you have to put up your own fence. I believe the other newer housing areas by the commissary are larger and have fences already. If I were you I'd try to get something by the commissary as it's closer to everything important and more things for the kids to do and your 6yo can walk to condor elem instead of ride the bus to 29 elem.

Hi Yessi

I totally get it we have been here for 1 month and live in a rented house until we get into base housing! It feels very isolated living off base I think it will be much easier to make some friends once we live there! Send me a msg and if you want we can meet up, I have 5 year old identical twin boys.

My name is Amanda I'm 32, I have an almost 4yr old daughter and a 6yr old son. I've been married to my husband Matt for almost 9yrs and we've known eachother for 18years. We have stayed on the east coast between Lejeune and Quantico and back to Lejeune. This is my first time in California.

Then it all worth it. Besides my 17 and 5 yr old i also have a 3 yr old.The 5 and 3 yr old are so very close. They can't live without each other. When ryan goes to school aidan is lost without him lol.And there's lots of moments where they fight a lot. But wouldn't have it any other way:) It's funny some people have asked me if they were twins. There's a big difference between the height. Ryan is very tall for a 5 yr..Some people mistake him for a 8 yr old lol.He is the tallest in his kindergarten class.Don't ask me where he got the tallness from i'm 5 3,my husband is 6 feet, not exactly that tall. Just hope they don't take after momma lol.Hope you have a great day!
