Winter activities for kids

One question that many moms ask during the winter is "What are my kids going to do today?" In the summer, it's much easier to just open the door and let your kids run around outside until their energy is gone (hopefully!). But in the winter, that's not always an option, especially with younger kids who can't navigate snow and ice very well.

Please share your ideas on winter activities (indoor and outdoor) that you do with your kids. To get the conversation started, I will list a few examples:

1. Mall Play Areas - I take my 2-year old to Annapolis mall and let him loose in the kid's play area. Or we have lunch at Ikea, which has one play area for little kids and another for bigger ones. Total cost - gas money + whatever you actually buy at the mall

2. Museums - I recently took the Metro down to the Natural History Museum with my son. The exhibits were really cool for both adults and kids, and so was the IMAX movie we saw (current topics are dinosaurs and ocean life). The carousel on the Mall is open during the winter too. But my son liked the Metro ride best of all! Total cost - Metro fare for me, 2 carousel tickets ($5), and lunch at the museum

I take my son to Chuck E Cheese once a week. Its  nice to let him loose and let him tucker out by playing his little heart out. we meet one of my friends and her little boy and its nice to let them play and we can chit chat.

i also heard that the building museum in DC is really good for kids. its got a huge play area and its gated in, so you can let your kids loose and you can chit chat with all the mommies, and your child is safe.

Also there is a Borders down the road from my house, and there is a nice childrens section that you can go to. the kids can relax and read or look at books, and it gives the parents time to relax as well.

Those are the things i do with my child during the colder days to stay in doors.

Pet stores - my daughter loves animals so we go and watch the dogs get groomed, say hi to the snakes, etc. It doesn't cost and thing and she totally enjoys it. Especially if they bring any animals out and let you pet them.
