My 3.5 yr old son is an early riser for sure but lately he has been waking at 5:40. He is obviously tired and is cranky and sometimes falls asleep in the afternoon. Anyone got any good ideas? We have him in bed by 7p because the later he goes to sleep, the earlier he wakes up. Maybe this is just something I have to get used to:(

If he's cranky than he's probably not getting enough sleep...I would also try just telling him he has to go back to bed, a book or toy might help or just being in his bed may be enough. On the other hand, 6-ish is not an unheard of time to get up and you may just want to schedule a regular naptime (which translates to Mommy free time for you!). Good luck!

I also have an early riser. He wakes up in the best mood and lets the whole house know that it is the start to another "Beautiful Day"! He is a child of habbit. He will only take a nap if he eats a PBJ first. We have told him not to come down stairs in the mornings untill the sun comes up. He has done well with this, but his big brother helps a lot.

My daughter is the same age and has the same problem. She is up at 6am every morning and it doesn't matter what time we put her to bed her wake up time is the same! I dont know if there is an answer to this problem. I am just happy that she sleeps thru the night! My older son sleeps in in the morning but is up 3-4 times a night-uggh!! Good luck!

My son turns 6 this year, he started with the early wake ups around 3 years old. To this day he still is up around 5. After my daughter was born we were so exhuasted from her that we didnt notice he was crawling into bed with us around 3 or 4 in the am. He still does it sometimes, but now when he is up for good, we can at least say go play in your room. For my 3 year old we never had the problem, I just put clocks in both their rooms, and she knows if the clock doesnt say 7, dont get out of bed. The clock thing doesnt work with the older one though but its worth a try...

I wish I had some bright idea for you, however my son is the opposite. He goes to bed between 11pm and midnight and I just can't get him down earlier than that. But he would sleep all day if I let him. He hasn't napped since just around his 1st bday and is 3.5 yrs old as well.

I'd suggest maybe putting a quiet toy to occupy himself next to his bed so when he wakes early in the morning he can lay there and play for a bit, maybe he'll just go back to sleep on his own. My 7 mo old has a ligh tin his room that has motion (cars racing) and he stares at that until his eyes are too heavy to hold open-and he's already trying to kick naps to the curb as well. But something to concentrate on with out over stimulating him seems to do the trick.

Wish I could be more help...
