I'm guessing that if any of you are like me, the fact that they took infant medicines off the market has been a very frustrating thing to deal with. I'm not a big medicine junkie, and I prefer alternative and natural methods of dealing with things whenever I can, but it's so hard when your child is sick and you feel helpless to do anything for them!

I mean, fevers can be scary but there is always infant Tylonel still availible. It's the colds and coughs that get to me, because my poor baby can't breath half the time, and she can't tell me if she has a sore throat when she's hacking away.

One thing that I've been doing is massaging her feet with Metholatum and then covering them with socks before bed. Then I use Vicks Baby rub on her chest and back. Both these things are supposed to help with cough and with easing chest pain and congestion. I'm not sure it has completely eliminated these symptoms, but I do think it has helped.

Also, we use saline drops in her nose to help loosen the mucus. Then we try to get her to blow her nose into a tissue. We do have a bulb syringe type asperater, but it's the kind you can open and clean, and due to that fact, it is cheap and does not really seal when closed. So yeah, it has no suction. One of these days I've really got to go out and buy and nice expensive and quaility aspirator. One Step Ahead has a really nice one I've been eyeing . . . I'm just poor . . .

Anyway, there's my rant about what I do when my poor baby is sick. Oh yeah, and we put the humidifier in her room, so the air won't be so dry and painful to breath. (It's doesn't help that it's winter and we live in a desert.)

So does anyone else have anything they have found effective when dealing with coughs and colds when medicine isn't an option?

It's just been on my mind because she's been sick with a cough and runny nose for about 3 weeks now . . . I'm so tired of hearing her cough and not knowing how to help her more.

I have been dealing with my daughter's cough for about two weeks now. A nurse at her peds office said to give her honey, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon every 4-6 hours and also warm Apple juice. I only did these before bed when she was coughing real bad at night and it did seem to help some. I don't think I'd do it much through out the day, unless her cough was really bad, due to the sugar factor.

When you use her humidifier put a little eucalyptus or tea tree oil in. I don't know if you will be able to get either O/S both a readily available in Australia.
