Hi all you mommy's out there. My name is Lori. I have two son's, Myles is 4 and Blake is 2....he was born in May of 07. I am considering having a third baby, but I am not sure. My first son tried to come early, but made it to 39 weeks, my second son tried to come early and did, 6 weeks to be exact. He is fine and only had to stay in NICU for two weeks until he gained some weight. The doctors can't figure out why my babies want to come early. I take excellent care of myself and I am very careful about food, exercise, etc while I was pregnant with both my boys. So if I had a third, I am worried that he/she would want to come even earlier. I have heard about woman getting the progesterin shot to help them carry to term, however I don't know too much about that. My other concern is that I am 33 (will be 34 in March). Oh, and I don't know if I could handle 3 little ones!! :) I do worry about that a little also. I know that once you get in your mid thirties, there are more risks also. I feel like I have been so blessed with my wonderful little boys, but for some reason I feel like I am suppose to have one more. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My progesterin level was low whith both my pregnancies and I have to insert a vaginal progesterin pill during pregnancy. I was going to a fertility specialist and he checked all my levels very closely. I don't think I could handle 3 kids. I am 25 and have already had a hystorectomy, for several reasons. Don't have another if you don't think you can handle it. You should be positive in your decision whatever it is.

Mehan,

Thank you so much for your words of advice. I really appreciate it. It is nice to hear from someone else that has been through the same type of thing. I am definitly going to have a talk with my doctor and weigh out all the pro's and con's. Thank you again and I wish you the best of luck with your decision also.

Hi Lori,

I don't really know that I can give you any real advice, but I can definitely relate to how you're feeling. I also have a very complicated pregnancy history and my daughter was born exactly one month early and had to spend two weeks in NICU. I have a very extensive history of pregnancy loss and pre-term labour, so the idea of venturing into another pregnancy is a very scary thing for me as well. With that said, I definitely don't feel like I'm done having kids either and will probably go at it again when I feel more ready.

To answer your question about progesterone, it doesn't do anything to help stop pre-term labour. It is often used during the first trimester for women with a history of miscarriage, but that's it. There are some things that can be done to help reduce the risk of going into pre-term labour though (like: bed rest and frequent ultrasounds to help monitor your cervix length). In my case, I had a procedure done at the end of the first trimester where they actually stitched my cervix shut (it's called a cerclage) and I think that's ultimately what saved my daughter's life.

The only real recommendation I can make is for you to have a long conversation with your doctor and discuss all of your concerns and possible try and get a referral to a high risk OB for the next pregnancy.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!

Regards,

Mahan
