Austin is the least bit interested in potty training. If I set a timer for every hour and take him, then he will peepee in the potty and stay relatively dry, but if I drop the timer he is just as happy to hang out in a wet pull up. As far as go poo, fat chance. He refuses. Any tips?

Going without pants helps sometimes - they seem to be more aware. Also, we had no luck with pull-ups. He just didn't seem to feel when he was wet in those. We bought cloth training pants online (they have some at Babies R Us too, though) and have had more success with those.

My son will be 3 on May 29th and he has been trained for about 4 months. I teach preschool and the biggest thing is that most boys are not potty trained fully until 3 1/2. Most people do not realize that. It is the one thing that they still have control of and they know that. With my son we just noticed that he was telling us after he went potty so we put a potty chair in the living room and he started using it. Also, my little guy loved to be naked, so taking off the diaper when you are home is a really good idea like another lady mentioned. The most important thing is to not rush it and do not get frustrated if he has set backs. Hope by now he is doing better!

What helped me is the library she will be 3 in May 21 and she has been potty trained for 2 weeks. They have a package on potty training set up and I rented it and just fed her brain potty training for months and I tried to only let her watch potty training videos and had potty training books. As a family we spoke on potty training in front of her and explained how mommy and daddy use the potty. We decided to use the open door policy our bathroom door always open to her so she could go in there while we were using the potty. I would sit her on the potty while I showered and that would help her go usually by the time the shower was done she had done something in it. She carried something with her to the bathroom.

Her favorite song was:

What do you like to do when you are sitting on the potty, when you are sitting on the potty for a while, there are lots of things to do that can make you happy too, sitting on the potty!

I decided that when she resisted it was time to stop for a day or two. Eventually she surprised me by telling me I have to go potty. You can always get a free video on potty training through pull ups.com this was a great resource. Is not good to make it a battle because this should be a natural thing for them. Blessings to you.

Yes, if you buy some boys little jocks and keep him in them, you will find that his security has gone. He will feel very strange in them, and won't want to poo or pee in them, and may even start crying because he is holding up his wee wee or poo. Then you put him on the potty, but not the big one, that's way too scary, and may frighten him for a very long time (you don't want that). Then pop him on the potty and he will go as he will be relieved from holding on. So, when he gets in the morning, slip on a pair of those jocks, thats exactly how you introduce them onto wearing them permanantly. It worked for my boy at 2 and a half and for several mums I know too. Try it, enjoy!

I hope your little man gets better. My little cousin had that problem once. Once the constipation came she associated pooing with hurting so she refused to go which caused more constipation. Her mother had to give her laxatives to make her poo. It took a while for her to adjust but she's lined back out.

No problem Lori, now I have to take my own advice again :) Lachlan had constipation and I had to take him to the doctor as he as complaining of a sore bum for a few days so on the 3rd day I decided to get him checked in case the doc saw something I didnt! Lucky i did take him! Anyway he had a couple of poo accidents while he was training and he cried when he did it and I thought it was because seeing the poo scared him but it was because it was hurting him! The doc told me to be careful with potty training as that is probably what caused it as it teaches them to hold on and can cause constipation. So the poor little man had to go back in nappies obviously til we got him normal again and the potty went out the window lol and now we are back at step 1 lol It has been a few weeks since constipation and he is just starting to not wear nappies again and show interest in going potty again. At least he remembers how to go lol So there are going to be times when they regress or stop going and Ive just kept asking him to put the idea in his head but never made him go. :)

I also had to use reverse phsycology on my little girl. I know potty training is different with girls and boys. but i know that helped and i also had to just not worry about it as much and then it started happening. we are in underpants during the day now. but it took her wearing them on a daily basis to get her to potty in thtoilet on a daily basis. other wise she would just go in her pullups. We also used the videos and that is what got her relly interested, seeing her peers

Thanks for the help. I will definitely try going without pants. That may be the key.

Also, to keep him encouraged about going potty start a reward system with stickers. Give him a sticker to put on his chart every time he goes wee in potty. And dont stress about poo just yet, just get over 1 hurdle at a time. When he is trained with wees then u can start on the poos. But just remember alot of kids get embarrassed and hide when they do poo and can take quite a bit longer to get them to go in the potty. Dont worry too much, its normal!

Hi Lori, I started with the half hour method putting my son on the potty every half hour in hope we would catch something in it! However that wasnt worth the angst and resistence so only lasted a few times! lol I have had Lachlan's potty sitting outside the toilet for over a year now, he is 2 yrs 7 months now and he would just go and sit on it whenever i would go to the loo. He wouldnt do anything but it was just a bit of pre potty training getting him familiar with it and making it a normal thing that mummy and daddy do too. Two weeks ago he took himself to his potty and did a wee in it! We made a big deal about it and clapped hands and he was so proud! His potty sings so he loves going to make his potty sing! He is now trained at home and i found that starting him wearing no pants reminds him he has to go but when he had nappy pants on he would forget and go in them. So I stayed home with him wearing no pants for almost a week and now when he wears pull ups he still remembers to go and takes his pants off himself. So wearing no pants to start with gets them used to recognising when they need to go and makes them go to potty so when they start wearing pants they are in a routine and remember to go still. If u take the pressure off, u will be amazed! They really do go in their own time. Start with the potty by the loo and get him to sit on it when u go. My son has bascially trained himself by copying us when he was ready :)
