What are good books for beginner readers?

My son just started sounding out the words in "Hop on Pop" by Dr. Seuss. I always thought the book was stupid, until he started reading it, of course. I think the rhyming really helps. So, does anyone have any good suggestions for first independent reading books?

Frog and Toad Are Friends. Go to VeritasPress.com and look at the first favorites booklists.

Find the BOB book series. I was amazed at how easily my four year old was able to read it by herself.
