Has anyone tried the "Baby Can Read" dvds that they have been selling on infomercials? It claims to be able to teach a baby to sight read as early as 1 year old. A friend of mine told me that it claims to help with speech delays also. It is a hefty investment, $200. If anyone has tried it or heard anything about it I'd love to know if it really works.

Sorry I forgot to mention she was reading these words, clap, hi, hand, hello, wave this happened in maybe a 2 week time and I was not as consistant as it tells you to be so my personal opinion is that it does work

Hello I bought them and I started playing the DVD for my then 18 month baby girl she did pick up on a lot of things but I encounter a problem we speak Spanish in the house and soon realized that she was only calling things in English I want her to pick up Spanish that way she can have both languages...I am thinking of selling them on ebay since I am not using it.

My son only says mama and dada, and even then it is only when he really really needs us.  He knows and understands everything.  I read him books and he can point out to me where certain items are on the page.  He can point out his nose, ears, mouth, belly button, toes, among many others.  He just doesnt speak.  I actually think that the 'Your Baby Can Read' DVDs are probably not the best approach to teaching a child to read.  Because it is teaching sight reading before phonics, which can turn into a problem.  But if it helped with speech delays then I might be willing to go ahead and do it.  I don't know.  Maybe I should just wait a little while longer and see what happens with his speech development.

I've seen them as well and wondered. But i would think that even as they watch over and over, it would be more beneficial reading to them. My daughter now pays attention to movies longer and has her favorites, but can also recognize actions and pictures out of books...slowly building vocabulary. What do you consider a speech delay? My doctor says we're okay but she doesn't pronunciate well yet (but I think some of that is by choice).

I have them!  My husband wanted them after seeing them on (I the Montel Williams show I think) tv.  His mom bought them for us a year ago as an early birthday present for my son, who was 9 months old at that time.  You are suppose to play them 2x a day.  I would put them on at least 1 a day sometimes 2, but sometimes not every day.  He did well, as time went on he seemed to pay more attention and would recognize words he saw.  They don't learn to read, they learn to recognize the words, which I'm sure will help when they do learn to read.  After 4 monthsI went to the 2nd dvd and he didn't like it as much, it was summer got busy and forgot.  We actally just found the box last week, and I said I'm going to start them again, especially now tha hes older.  After watching them for only a couple days my son would clap his hands when the word came up before they said it.  I wouldn't spend $200.  We got it for $75 for the 5 DVD set with flash cards.  It was a special offer from being on tv.  The web on the box is www.TeachYour Baby.com.  The price on the box is actually on the bottom of the box U.S. $79.99.  Hope this helps.  I'm actually going to start tomorrow, thanks for the reminder.

it sounds like a scam...... have you ever seen a baby read anything? let alone speak a full vocabulary at 1?
