My 1yr old son doesn't like to get his diaper changed; Every time my hubster && I attempt to change him, he kicks, whines, tries to get up. Its a lot harder when there is poo. I tried distracting him with toys && such, but he ends up just throwing them. Any ideas?

Nothing really new to add besides finding strange things for him to play with like the medicine dropper or something really novel that he sees at no other time. A wipe or diaper is good too. A song that involves using his hands to make motions is also good. On the changing table, I sometime use the belt that came with the pad if he is really squirmy.

It must be a thing they all do because have the same issue. Like most of you, I have tried giving her anything within reach that wont cause bodily harm. These all work for a few days and we are back to square one. I have decided that the easiest route for us both is to do it while she stands. This ofcourse doesn't work when poops are involved but when she's wet it works just fine. I figure she only tolerated me changing her laying down because she couldn't stand. Now that she can.... well, I guess I have to change as she changes (no pun intended). The good news about changing standing up is when you find yourself somewhere that doesn't have a changing table available. . . you're a pro at improvising. ..

My son does this and I give him age inappropriate toys that he is not usually allowed to have while I clean him. Then I let him stand to put the diaper back on him. Even so, this doesn't always work either. And he is incredibly strong; if he wants free I can't hold him down by myself.

Quoting Mary:

We often have the same problem. Ever since she could roll over, our daughter has been impatient with diaper changes! All the rolling and thrashing - it has resulted in some messes =) I sometimes am desperate enough to give her semi-innapropriate 'toys' that entertain her for a moment. The nasal aspirator - she loves to chew on - gross, I know. Now that she likes singing and clapping along, a round of 'Old Mac Donald' or 'B-I-N-G-O' keeps her happy for a moment while I change the diaper. And silly animal noises work too! If only someone would see me saying 'BAAAAAA" or "NAAAAAAY" all day long...

We have an aspirator shaped like an elephant that's really squishy (whose idea was that if you don't want a baby to play with it!)  Anyways, my daughter likes to chew on it too.  You ever get that noise?  The one where you know shes sucking out her own spit and squeezing it back in again? Ewww...but hey its her own germs right? Just wanted to share!

Were having the same problem. I think its really the "new independence" they've discovered and they just don't have time to be bothered. :) I just firmly hold her legs with a little force until she gives in. She really likes the wipes container...i sometimes even open it and she just continuously pulls out wipes...but hey it works. I just stuff them all back into the container when were done....she even helps with that.....:)

My son also does this, more so before or after a nap/sleep. I found that if I give him another diaper to hold onto it helps calm him down. Also give him the tube of diaper rash cream or some other small toy. Even socks help keep him still long enough to change him.

My little gril is the same, such a nightmare!!! I try to have a regular changing place so that she knows that when we are there its nappy time and i try to have toys that she only has at nappy time to try and keep her attention more than 5 secs. others than that i have a couple of times resorted to putting it on while she is standing just to advoid the fight!

It took me about 10 minutes tonight to get his nappy on so i will have to try these thing too. I give him things to play with which sometimes helps :D

My daughter loves when I do animal sounds: "what does the cow say?... moo, etc."

If nothing works, use one forearm across the waist to hold him down while you take care of business. Good luck!

My son is doing the same thing. He loves books, so I have found that giving him a book to hold works...sometimes. Other times I just try other things like my cell phone or something he doesn't usually get to play with. At school they give them a diaper to hold and I ask him to hand it to me when I'm ready for it. There are other times where I need my husband to stand there with him and hold his legs while I wipe. Hopefully it's just a phase.

Music! My daughter does the same thing. And while it doesn't always work, I try to play fun music for her. Sometimes she claps and smiles, you have to change fast! I also keep small toys on the changing table that she only sees when she's getting changed. I let her pick one before we get started. But once I'm changing I don't let her get up, even if she cries. I hope she outgrows this fast cause the kicks are starting to land well!

Yea, I know what you mean, my son has kicked me pretty hard in my stomach uggh; && I am def going to try the music. Thanks so much!
