Has any one heard of breathing or breath holding spells? That is what the doctor says happened to my daughter last night. She fell and cried for a second and then stopped breathing for about 60 seconds and turned blue before she started to cry again!!! Scariest minute of my life!!!! Has anyone else heard of this?

my daughter had the same thing about a year ago & there was actually an underline problem, she had a low red blood cell count & had to get a blood transfusion. i would have your dr check her iron & blood levels b/c my daughter hasnt had a problem since the transfusion. i got some good advice from answers.com, {just put in BHS}also blowing in the face is good & when my daughter would 'pass out' or faint laying her down so her heart & head were level helped her come to quicker. hope this helps!

My little one does this when she cries I usually just blow in her face then she stops, one thing that works with the tantrums though, as soon as they start throwing tantrum turn your back and ignore them completely, it might sound harsh but they start to realize that, with that kind of behaviour they wont get attention and kids do love attention. I did that with my little one and she would stop her tantrum would come up to me and give me a hug (her way of saying sorry). She hardly throws tantrums anymore.

Sometimes the breath holding can be another way for them to have a "temper tantrum". The more attention you pay to it, the more they do it. If they get what they want out of it they will keep doing it. Even though it is very try to stay calm with it...they will breath again. Try what Angela said about blowing in their face. It is basically like a puff of air and it startles them enough that they gasp. Good luck!!

i didn't really have that problem with my children before, but working in childcare, i've experienced it quite a bit. one of my co-workers told me just to blow in their face, not real hard, i don't know exactly how it works, but it has always worked for me. it's almost like a 'hey you' they can't quite ignore. hope this helps, i would get it checked out, as adrienne said, but it's probably just her way of getting your attention, to let you know it really hurt when she fell.

My daughter does this when she is really upset but it usually only lasts 1-2 seconds. She cries until all of her air is out of her lungs, turns blue and kind of passes out before taking a breath. Scary! Apparently lots of children do this and it is normal but should be checked out by the doctor just in case it has an underlying cause.
