Celiacs Disease: For those of you who have kids who eat a ton and are not gaining weight, I would check for celiacs disease (they can't process gluten). I've had a few friends lately who have FINALLY gotten a correct diagnosis on their underweight children who can't seem to get full...especially if they have a lot of poopy diapers. I'm not saying that this would apply to everyone with kids like that--but it often goes misdiagnosed...and when it is diagnosed it makes a HUGE difference. As I'm reading this, I also realize that my daughter is extremely underweight...20 mths and only 17 lbs. It has been brought up by my doctor, but I haven't thought it is a big deal...It doesn't seem that anyone has real ideas for why...but thanks for the idea on the pediasure. She is a picky eater and I know she isn't getting what she needs.

My son is 21mnths and weighs 20lbs, he was a normal 7.2lbs when he was born and since then he just picked up weight very slowly, the only time he was at a normal weight for his age was when he was born. He eats twice as much as other children his age, he is very active so I'm not in the least worried about it. If your child is healthy, happy and a good eater you should not worry about how much she weighs!

MY SON IS EXTREMELY UNDERWEIGHT. He's a may baby, 21 months? He JUST hit 20 lbs. He is not even anywhere close to being on the percentile growth charts. He went for 8 months without growing at all. We were sent to specialists and everything. they did blood tests, urine samples, stool samples and high calorie diets. In the end they found nothing wrong with him. He is very active and way advanced in his speech and motor skills. They told us that sometimes there are children who somehow have learned to regulate their food intake and as long as they are staying on a curve (even if it is their own curve way off of everyone else's charts) then they are still growing and will be fine. They told us that what is worrysome now will actually be a good think later because he will not ever have weight gaining issues as an adult! As long as you have had everything on her checked out to make sure that there really isn't anything wrong with her, then don't worry! You have a LITTLE girl!

My son is almost 22 months, he weight 24 lbs. He was 4 weeks early, weighed 6lbs 12oz and 18 3/4 inches. He was at the 50% line on the height/weight chart until 4 months old, then every check up he kept falling down until he was completely off the chart. He didn't even come back on to the chart until his 18 month check up, and even then he was only at the 5% line. Every child is different, but my son is sooo active, never sits still. ( I have a cousin whose 11 month old weighs the same as my son, he is also healthy)

mt5rnmMandi~I wasnt refering to the moms on here when I said that people need to stop comparing kids and weights~ I more meant the people who are constantly comparing my kid to theirs, or telling me my daughter is too small. I understand worrying~I worry plenty, you can ask my daughters doctor :)

Actually if you actually went and read all the posts, most of the people arn't saying that their babies are underweight, as a matter of fact alot of people are saying the same thing you are...and trying to make people who are worried feel better...and mothers are allowed to worry about their children weather its legitimate or not...thats just what mothers do and theres nothing wrong with it ... sometimes we just need reassurance.

ok~ so everyone on here says their baby is underwieght~ but all these babies wiegh about the same~ I think that everyone needs to stop comparing their baby to everyone elses and as long as your baby is healthy and happy~ how big they are doesnt matter!! My daughter is 23 pounds and all I hear is "she is sooo tiny" "your daughter is so small" She might be small but she is healthy in every way! She has celiacs but I keep her on a completely gluten free diet so that does not affect her. Both my husband and I are short so how can anyone expect her to be big! Just enjoy your child and as long as they are healthy and happy dont listen to anyone else!

My daughter is 22 months old, she was born on her due date at 6lbs 5oz and today she only weighs 21 or 22 lbs ...she has always been small but the doctors and health nurses aren't worried, they say she is at a good weight for her height and as long as she is eating good that I shouldn't worry. She has always been really small because I am a petite person and her dad isn't very big either. I always worry of course but keep getting reassured that she is perfectly fine.

[deleted account]

I wouldnt worry about it, I have 3 children who are all quote underweight, but as long as they are growing progressively they are fine. My 10 yr old boy wears size 8 clothes, my 5 yr old fits in some 2 yr old clothes and my 2 yr old fits in some 12m. clothes. they are all very healthy just small happy kids.

My daugther is 21 months old and weighs 24 pounds. She is tall and skinny. Like her daddy. She weighed 8lbs 1 1/2oz when she was born. The doctor says she is heathy though.

My son is almost 22 months, we have been dealing with weight issues also. He has always been small...was born 1day over due at 7lbs 20.5inches, my smallest baby since 2months has been at 25% then at 6months 10% 9 months 5%, 12months 3%, 18 moths not on chart and just had a weight check 2 weeks ago and came up a little...not quite on the chart yet but getting closer. He weighs 21lbs 6 oz. He seems to eat ok, we have been trying higher fat, calorie food in the last 4 months and it helped a little. We also give him Carnation instant breakfast once a day, doctor recomended that or pediasure and since it was the cheaper version we went with that. I just get the powdered can and mix it with whole milk he really likes it. Any other suggestions would be greatly apreiciated. Doctor says he is fine just really small, i kinda wonder about food allergies being a concern sometimes because he used to break out in rashes on his face when eating certain foods, everything i have read usually points towards food allergies with slow weight gain. Pediatricain doesnt do allergy testing so we would have to go to a specialist and she doesnt think it is necessary

Hi All, more or less in the same boat! my son is 20 months old and weighs 26 lbs :((
As with all ur docs, mine too says as long as he is active by mind and body all is fine...but it does feel sad when people feel say he looks like a 11 or 12 month old...he still fits into 9-12 month clothes n i no longer feel happy about it....

my doc says pediasure shoul not be given till 30 months? i feel we should try and encourage healthy eating rather than let the child starve as this will become habit for later life too....but what when the child doesnt feel hungry?? all he wants is chocolates and milk :(

i have treid alfa alfa and it does help provided the child is ready to take it!

My son was born on his due date at 8lb 5oz and he is 21 months and weighs 24lbs. My ped said he is just petite and not to worry. If he gets sick and drops weight then we might have to take precautions. The biggest problem I have is finding pants to fit. If they fit his height then they are too big around the waist and if they fit is waist they are too short.

His weight dropped to 6Lbs 5oz so we did a lot of visits to the doctors over the first month or so until his weight came up.....Now at almost 21 months he is 31Lbs and just shy off 3 Feet. My daughter is 23 pounds, She was 9lbs 7oz when she was born. She was in the 95th percentile until she was 9 months old and then her growth dropped to the 25th percentile. The doctor is expecting a growth spurt between two and three. My doctor says she is perfectly healthy and she gets her vitamins (a chewable) every morning and drinks at least one cup of milk a day, sometimes two or three but I am not concerned because I know she is getting all of her vitamins and she eats ALL the time. She is just active and has a high metabolism (Thank Goodness!).

My daughter is 21mo. She weighs about 22-23lbs. She was born one day late and was 9lb 9oz 21in long. My daughter is very picky at what she eats and will find one food she likes, and sticks with it for a few weeks. Oatmeal was her latest phase. Every single meal she would refuse unless it was oatmeal. Her dr was concerned about her weight and I was for a little while, but she is SO active and is very tall for her age. She is about 35in. Shes been 75-100% in height since birth. I wouldnt worry about it. Every child is different and every body is different. Just because your little one is petite, doesnt mean there is anything wrong medically.

My 20 month old is 30lbs. 8 oz. and WIC said she was to fat but the doctor said she was fine because i am 5'6 her dad is 6'3 and she is almost 3 foot. She was born at 7lbs. 1 oz. and only 19 inches. As long as they eat and are "medically healthy" don't worry about it, just make sure you keep the pediatrician informed of her eating habbits. Doctors tend to forget that not every baby is the same as the next just like adults... they are people just smaller. They have a tendencie to place all babies of the same age into the same catagory forgeting heritage and all. Don't worry they grow ... eventually and the ones that don't get taller or wider just see the world from a different point of view!

Most 20 month olds are between 20 and 30 pounds. in this equation you also have to take in the "natural size" of the parents ( were either small as kids then flipped a groth switch and giant over night or large parents as kids..family history ) however, if you are still worried and it is food that is the issue try sweetening it up a bit..ie: a little brown sugar on cooked carrots, just a little can go along way with them, try yogurt ( not fat free) i find that most of the kids I know prefer strawberry, banana, peach yogurt flavors or combo of them. try whole mike ( even 1 small shake in the evening at least 1 hour before bed can help), try the pediasure if you prefer this adds vitamins as well as helps them gain weight. Contrary to popular belief "junk food does not add weight, it's how much of it that adds weight" but no one wants cavities so go for the whole fat food products " the yogurt, cottage cheese..etc". Try to stay away from "empty calorie foods"..things like popcorn do not add weight. find ways to "slow" the toddler down after eating...like read a book and take a bath things that will help the food have time to settle this gives the body more time to absorb energy for a later time and by doing this the little one should be able to gain weight. hope this helps!

Yes!! My 21 month old is in the 4th percentile for her weight. I have had to track her eating and submit the info to the doctors. The consensus is that she is petite. I never had reason to be concerned, she is very active, eats well, is not a picky eater either. The doctors expressed more concern then I did, but it did make me nervouse, especially when the doctor referred to 4th percentile as 'failure to thrive numbers, although that doesn't seem to be the case here'. After wathcing for about a year now everything still seems fine and she is still mistaken for a much younger baby if she isn't walking or talking!!

Josh is in about the 5% percentile for weight, and he was in the 50% in the first half of his life. He is just a really really active boy, and prefers only fruits and veggies and lean meat. His father and I aren't health nuts, but he just has a preference for the healthy stuff. He is about 22 lbs and 20 months and was a week overdue when he was born. The doctor said not to worry, as long as he continues to grow taller and is healthy being underweight isn't a problem.

My son was born at 42 weeks and weighed 6lbs 11oz. He is 20 1/2 months and only weights 20-21 lbs. The doctors keep telling me he is underweight and only in the 3rd precentile for his weight. He is in the 50th percentile for his height. They just say that as long as he's eating and not having any problems that I shouldn't worry. He's just a very active child. He's always running and playing and of course trying to get into things he shouldn't be! :) I wouldn't worry about your child being underweight unless you are noticing something out of the ordinary for him/her.

My daughter is only 21 pounds at 21 months. Try not to worry too much if your baby is happy, active, healthy and developing well mentally. The only time I worry is when she gets sick/a cold and loses weight, other than that I try not to think about it much.

YES!!! My son was born in May of 2008 and he is under the charts!! He is very healthy and can eat two hot dogs in one sitting and then some, but the boy doesn't stay still. My husband is a very petite man and I am well lets say FULL figured. He was six days over due at 7lbs 11oz and 20 inch medically he was a full term baby. His pediatrician is really not worried about him because he says that some children grow at slower rates than others and that eventually he will catch up. As long as he/she is happy, eating, and mentally developing they don't worry very much. I hope this helps.

My daughter was born 5 weeks early weighing in at 5 pounds....now at 21 months she is still only 18lbs 7ozs....quite underweight for her age. Her doctor isn't too concerned being that she is learning to do things at the same rate as other kids her age. She can eat all day and not gain much. I've tried giving her cottage cheese and avocodo since they are high in calories and natural fat but she's not too fond of it so a little "trick" I use with her, and this may sound gross, is to mix either the cottage cheese or avocodo with flavoured yougurt and then freeze it. She LOVES it then.....a healthy treat for her and it helps her gain weight. Hope this helps.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, mine has been underweight for a long time, born a week after her due date, weighing 6 lbs 13 oz and only weighted 6 lbs leaving the hospital. She is now 22 months and only weighs 22 or 23 lbs, but she isn't walking yet. No two children are exactly alike. Too much advice will drive you nuts! Our pediatrician is happy as long as she stays along the same height and weight scale. 75% in the height category and around 5-10% in the average weight category. But, she isn't walking either, so there's our draw back. I'm fine with it, I know she is okay since she was thoroughly examined by a pediatric orthopaedic specialist and HE said she was fine. That being said, I do my best to ignore the incessant questions about her "not walking even though she will be two in May" and compared to nearly ALL other children, this is abnormal. Be confident in your instincts and your connection with your child. Do what you know to be right for your child and check with your pediatrician if you don't think something is right. Even the little stuff is not "little." If it's important to you...then it IS important. I hope this helps!

My gbaby is 21 months old and 20 pounds. She was on time but only around 5 lbs. She is healthy, happy, busy, never stops talking, and she does eat when she stops long enough. She is just little and busy. As long as they keep growing in height, weight or head circumference they are fine. You only worry if growth stops.

hey my daughter was born 10days early @ 6lb 9oz . she is now 21mths old and weighs 17lb 3oz and is 74cm tall. she wears 6-9mths old clothes sometimes 9-12mths if we're lucky.
she has daily suppliments of pro-cal and pro-cal shots averaging about 600cals and 25g protein extra every day. she gains an oz or two then losses it the next week. we have had all the tests and scans done but no medical problem has been found.
she eats such small quantities of food cos she so small but soooo active that she burns it off so quickly. but she will eat anything u give her not fussy at all.
she fells off the growth charts at 2mths and has never got never the red band since! she sitts happily about 2inchs from the red at the mo.

she's a perfect 9mths old - who is 21mths! xx

Hi! My daughter will be 21 months in a couple days, she was born right on her due date weighing 7lbs12oz.....this whole time she has been at the 2nd percentile for weight gain, the doctor had all these tests done, and they nothing is wrong, she is just small!!! But PERFECT!! Last week she weighed 21lbs6oz....and the doctor was happy as she hit the 7th percentile. But she did mention to try giving her pediasure.

It took the 5 yr old forver to gain weight. I try and compare the youngest to my two older kids who are both very tall and one was 7 lbs 8 ozs at birth and the other was 13 10 so i guess they are all diffrenet just hang in there we will get there.

My 21 month old son was born 9 days over (I was induced) and weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces at birth. He now ways just under 22 pounds. He has nut, dairy and egg white allergies but I cook and bake almost all his food and he eats plenty... I'm about to take him to the paediatrician to get him checked out... I do my girl is in the 5% for weight. However she is in the 10% for height so that is not that bad. She has really small shoulders and just a tiny body. She does not look like she is underweight to me. I have two other kids that are 6 and 5 they were much taller but were small also. They are very healthy and have been sick only a few times. My 20 month old has only been sick two times. I do daycare and we have had alot of sick kids lately coming in and out and she has only been sick one time during this period. My 20 month old only weighs 22 lbs. I am ok with that she a week overdue, exclusively nursed for a year, and eats really well and healthy foods. I think that is just the way that she is. She will probably weigh 90 lbs as an adult and make me JEALOUS LOL
