Climbing stairs...

My son just learned how to climb stairs the other day. It took him about 5 minutes and he figured it out. We just moved into a home that has stairs, and before now he has never even seen stairs yet to try out. He refuses to put his knees down on the steps when he climbs up. He also uses his head as an anchor for the top step. Any ideas on how to teach him how to go back down the stairs? He refuses to sit on his butt and slide down and wants to "walk" down like Mama and Dada do...but our stairs are very long and steep. He has no fear!

Even after numerous attemps to get him to turn him around and go down backwards, he still refuses. He wants to WALK down the stairs. The stairs are gated off on top and bottom. Now he pushes me away while I keep my hands by him while he is going up the stairs. What an independent little man he is turning out to be!!

backwards is the best way, but never alone!

our son also put crawling and stairs together right away! He's been going up since about 10 months and only started with down around his birthday. He goes down crawling in reverse and makes good time! I figured since we have stairs I wanted him to know how use to them and how to use them safely

My son does the same thing.. We just simply turn him around and make him go down backwards.. he already was familiar with this because we taught him this way to get off of the couch. Hope this helps

I hold my daughter's hand when she wants to go down stairs and she does it like I do, except I'm holding most of her weight heh. She bends her knees and everything. We don't have stairs or anything in our home though so she practices mainly at the playground.

Van has been climbing stairs since he could crawl - one kinda followed the other. He has yet to go down by himself (on his butt or on his knees). Dad and I do try to show him, and he's gone down one or two steps like that... but then he gets excited and goes right back up.
We have baby gates at the stairs and eyes like hawks. No spills yet!

I think 1 is too young to ever be on a set of stairs. All our steps are locked or gated and will stay that way in the foreseeable future.

My daughter goes up the normal way but won't go down either. I got a baby gate for the BOTTOM of the stairs. Hee-Hee. Everytime I rounded the corner she was 3-4 stairs up and climbing quick! I'm afraid of her falling down. But anyways we go to gymboree. I've noticed her learning things I didn't know she could when she watches other kids do it. And she's more patient there to keep trying things she doesn't like. She has learned how to sit down when I ask which makes me feel better but we're still working on the backwards thing. I say just keep trying. Repetition!
