My 3 year old started sleeping with me shortly after her birthday. I don't know if it was bad dreams or what, but she'd wake in the middle of the night screaming. Once I started letting her sleep with me I noticed that she would start to wake up and was about to start crying. I'd put my hand on her and she'd settle down and go back to sleep. Now she hardly wakes at night, but she's still sleeping with me. I do notice some nights that she wakes a bit and comes and cuddles up a bit more then goes back to sleep.
Some nights she'll sleep in the same room as her little sister now, and I think just having someone else in the room with her is comforting. She's always had her own room and her own bed, but I've always allowed my girls to be in bed with me if they wake in the night. She still takes naps in her own bed in her own room, but now she goes to sleep in my room in my bed.
My solution isn't necessarily anyone else's solution, but I understand sleep troubles at age 3 is a very common thing. Their imaginations are just exploding at this age and it's very hard for them to tell the difference between real and imaginary.
