Its not mandatory to have a theme party for one year olds but choosing a theme will make it easier for you to give a coordinated look to your party. Don’t feel pressurized; if you don’t want to take up any theme, it’s completely fine. You can also consider very simple themes such as a jungle safari party or maybe a balloon party.

I have three children and for my firstborn Kayleigh (now 11) I did pooh bear because she loved pooh. For the middle child Caleb (now 7) I did Detroit Redwings Hockey it was super cute, For our little suprise Jordyn who will be one 5-25 (memorial day) I am doing the princess theme.

My theme this year is family lol. Since everyone in the family wanted to contribute something, my mom is getting some decorations, my grandma is getting others.... Of course, they NEVER coordinate, but I don't think that really matters all that much. He's one, and they bought them out of love.
I hope everyone in the group posts 1st birthday pictures!!!! So much fun!

Angie - Matthew loves that So Big baby Elmo book too. We aren't really having a theme, but I will be making an Elmo cake for him. Plus he'll have the family tradition - a simple round chocolate cake with chocolate icing - the whole thing will get placed on his tray for him to dig in. Can't wait for the pictures!

uhm... no theme here. We're not even really having a party. I went to a 1st birthday party for a friends kid once and he screamed and was terrified by all the people oogling after him so I definitely don't want that for my baby. My mom is visiting the 1st weekend in May and DH's mom is visiting the second weekend. I might take her to the park on her actual birthday with a couple of my friends but that'll be it. Oh, I am making her cupcakes (probably gonna have some both weekends gma's are here lol) but I don't think I'ma give her any frosting, as she's never really had sugar and I don't want her to have an upset tummy or get super cranky from not feeling well (I know if I eat too much sugary stuff I feel icky).

we're doing a pirate theme for our son's first, coz the favourite sound out of his mouth for the past 3 months has been "arrrrrrrrrrrr" so we think it's appropriate, but i agree with some of the other mums, if your son has a fav tv show - just go with that, and play episodes of it over and over on the telli in the background, might help keep him grounded while there is so much going on around him. If you can't think of a theme tho, just lots of bright happy colours in balloons and streamers, good cake and plenty of friends and family always make for a good celebration. :) goodluck and have fun with it....that's what it's really about and remember to take lots of pictures!

I'm using Abby Cadabby she loves Sesame Street so I figured it would be nice she love her too she has a dll that can't let go off. But I'm only doing a big party because I feel is kind my way of showing her off. But after this one no more big b-day parties until she's 5 and she can enjoy the party herself.

I dont think u have to. Its better to make it simple anyway. My daguhter will be 1 in may and hers will be Yo Gabba Gabba..but only becuz she LOVES it. If u want to..pick something your son LOVES more than anything and use that! If u dont..then just be simple and get the 1st bday things...after all that is the main focus right?

well I have a little girl, but I am doing a "spring flowers" theme. Not really going overboard though...flower-shaped cupcakes, some outdoor flower things that stick in the ground, and cute plates and napkins. I also got little photo clips with flowers on them and will put pictures of her from birth through 12 months (I took monthly pics in the same spot all along) in them as the "centerpiece" on the table. You don't have to do a theme. Pick a few colors you like for your little guy and go with that. I feel like people only use the theme for the cake and plates and some decorations anyway. Don't feel pressured, and make sure to have fun!

We're doing Sesame Street with Baby Elmo.  My daughter loves Elmo.  Her favorite book is the So Big book with Baby Elmo.  Everytime she sees him, she throws her arms up in the air and shouts.  I Googled first birthday party supplies and found all kinds of things.

My son loves Curious George. We turned it on one morning when he was around 3 months and he was mezmerized by it. These days, even when we have the tv on in the background for us, he will continue playing with his toys and ignore it. As soon as we put Curious George on, he stops and will sit quietly and watch. He also sleeps with his Curious George stuffed animal. So naturally, his theme will be Curious George.

I just got this catalog in the mail for this website and it has some good generic ideas if you don't want a specific theme. http://www.1stwishes.com/.
