How do you get your children to eat? I have been trying to get my baby to eat food since she was 6 months old and she never eats very well. She tastes food but does not really eat very much. I am still breastfeeding her but I know that she need to eat food as well and I do not know how to encourage her to eat. Please help!

My daughter is 10 months. She loves to eat I never really had any trouble getting her to eat. The only trouble that I found was when I started to introduce food with chunks in it. That she would not eat, it was just a pain to try. So I just cut up some of my dinner and that is what she eats.
Even though it is chunky I think that it is because it is not a mixture of chunk and smooth. Also she always eats her meals with us at the table.

I'm in the same boat. Still nursing at 10 months. My daughter is super picky. Some days she'll eat pureed fruits, veggies and baby cereal. Most days she only wants things she can put in her mouth herself. Then there are the days she won't eat the self feeding foods she normally will. I was worried too. Especially when my daughter stopped drinking expressed milk for her caregivers. She went a few days with no milk or food! The dr said as long as she eats something, the milk thing was okay b/c all foods have liquids in them. And she is growing fine so if she wants to be fussy with eating, it is not a huge worry. So I am plagued with not knowing what to leave for her breakfast and lunch and just wing it. If she doesn't eat what I leave for her, then she'll at least eat cheerios and puff snacks. I'm working on a sippy cup with her so maybe we can get liquids going again.

Food is just practice up until a year. Breastmilk is all they need nutritionally...so don't stress! As long as she's still nursing, just let food be a fun learning thing for her.

We started slowly around 9 months with a few bites of avacado, then some sweet potato. I've also given him a few bites of cheddar cheese, and he loved that. We've also don't roasted butternut squash, which he loved. I've also steamed some pears and apples, then pureed them and added a little cinnamon and nutmeg and he loved thoes too.

Some days he'll take a few bites and some days he isn't interested. So...no worries!

my 10 month baby girl loves porridge - any kind....oh and she loves chicken and sausage and meat - so long I chew it fine for her first. She will eat a piece of pasta but if I cook homemade food for her she wont eat it - maybe a spoon or two and then stops. She eats the jarred foods though. I so much want her to eat homemade food - anybody have any good recipes for me?

Have you every tasted that baby food not very flavorful. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Some kids like to have small meals through out the day. Others like to eat until they are stuffed full. I would just keep trying different things until you find out what they like. Some kids have a hard time eating solid food. You say that you are still nursing, you baby probably enjoys mom time over solid food. The only time you should worry about how much they eat is if they are not growing. If your baby is growing then you are fine. I would just keep offering the food to her and when she wants it she will take it. Don't ever force them to eat it because you will have a harder time getting them to try new things when they are older.

My son is ten months and I am in the same predicament. He will not feed himself, doesn't want to try new foods, sometimes likes a food, then refuses to eat in another day. I started giving him baby jarred food, and didn't make alot of fresh food, but I am now and he still refuses the fresh stuff. I know I have to have patience, but it seems that I've talked to so many Mom's that had really good eaters. It's good to know that I am not the only on having a tough time at this. I'll keep trying, as of today he hasn't eaten much but a few spoonfuls of oatmeal/apple and I hope it's just teething because he just refuses to eat. GOod luck and I hope our babies get the hang of this eating thing soon!

while i don't personally have a problem getting my 10 month old son to eat anything, lol, having 3 kids i do know that you just have to be persistant. they are reluctant to give up nursing/bottle feeding and put effort into meal time. just keep trying. you have to give them foods over and over again before they'll give in. just set a meal time schedule, and try different foods. at 10 months she can pretty much eat what you are eating, i mean as long as it's not fast food or something. i know my son prefers to eat things he can feed himself over being spoon fed. good luck!!

You know, I have heard this from other moms a fair bit, but my son eats like a champ. He loves food! He has yet to try anything he doesn't like and we have done a new food every four days with almost no exception since he was 6 months, so he has tried a lot.

I will say that he will not eat any kind of jarred food. I make everything from fresh veggies and fruit, etc. with whole grains (including pasta and bread, etc) and fresh chicken, tofu. etc. We have tried jarred stuff a handful of times and he has always turned his nose up and I know why - I tasted them, too and they taste horrible compared to fresh stuff. Maybe that would make a difference?

The only prepared stuff he will eat are the fruit puree stuff in the pouches. I have heard great things about Sprout, but we haven't tried it. Plum Baby and another brand...I can't think of it...are the only ones he has had and I just keep one in the diaper bag for when we are out. He can even suck the fruit out of it himself so I think that is part of why he likes them.

If you think you don't have time to make fresh stuff, you do! its super easy to just steam or boil veggies or fruit and then puree it, spoon into ice cube trays and freeze.

On the other hand, if you are making everything (or even some things) at home already, you might just try adding spices like cinnamon or cumin or sweet curry. My little guy loves curry! Just never add salt or sugar.

I found that when I started making cereals at home, he was more interested in eating them. real brown rice has a way better flavor. Also, he loves millet and quinoa and they are easy, too. Just grind in a (clean) coffee grinder until powder, wisk into water, and simmer for ten minutes. I do about a quarter cup of grain per cup of water, but I would start with more water if you are going from instant cereals.

He also loves plain whole milk yogurt, but I add fresh fruit puree to it every other day or so to keep it interesting. If you haven't tried yogurt, maybe she will like that?

Good luck, and remember that as long as she is still nursing, she really doesn't "need" anything else anyway. You are her main source of every nutritional need!

Thanks...It is good to know I am not the only one with this problem. I do usually feed her when we are eating, I do not feed her processed baby food, I have always made my own, I have tried things cold & Hot.

OMG i have the same problem and it's stressing me out to the max!! My boy just turned 10 months yesterday and has been a fussy eater since the day he was born. He's very inpredictable, some days he will try a certain food and like it, and the next time he won't have anything to do with it anymore. I think you should try feeding her at the table when you all are eating..and make sure their is a big gap from when you brestfeed to solid feed. Sometimes they like their food warm, or cold, not sure what you do. I think it could also be teething at this point, my boy has no teeth yet and has been very fussy for couple weeks..also maybe she doesn't like baby food, try homemade foods..it's so hard to get to know what they like, good luck to you!!!...I'm still figuring stuff out myself...
