my son has been walking around naked because he has had bad diaper rash. now, he grabs himself quite abit. Is this normal for a boy. My husband says it is. I have never raised a boy.

Hi, when I saw this converstation, I had to join the community. My son who is now 11 months has been grabing himself since was 9 months. When ever he is in the tub or if I am changing his pamper. I have come to believe its just a boy thing. Specially since I am noticing so many boys of his age is doing it.

Its normal. Im suprised he just started doing it. He's just learning how different parts of his body function. ALL male babies do it.

My eleven month old son, Max, just started doing this as well! I think it is totally normal, its just like discovering a hand or a foot. And to be honest, in the bath tub its the only time he sits still lol

Totally normal! It's a little disconcerting for a mom with no boy experience but he's just discovering his body. When he's older you can explain that certain things are just to be done in private but at this age there's no point. The whole world is new and exciting so that body part is too!

My son does it too. It's another way a little boy discovers his world...nothing to be ashamed of.

Yep, it's all perfectly normal. It's actually important for them to do this, especially if they aren't circumcised. If they aren't circumcised the foreskin is fused to the head of the penis for about the first 3 years. Them playing with it is what finally allows it to be pulled back so it can be cleaned.
Just let him go. Boys and their penises - the fascination never stops, does it!!! LOL

absolutely it seems to be... my son who will be 1 year old next week is always checking it out when I am changing his diaper. He doesn't grab himself in the tub or any other time, but when we are changing him... it keeps him occupied. nothing to worry about in my opinion

Well I have a 7 year old son he never did grab his willy all the time like you girls are saying lol.... Never does my wee boy who has just turned 1 . My son doesnt have a nappy on 24 /7 I give him a breather lol ...He has touched it a few times so he does know its there lol
Every child loves to explore ......
My cousin had 4 boys and from what i can remember they were always touching theirs , lol
If you make a big deal about it to the baby - he will touch it more. Not saying you do lol. I just ignore my boy ....

My little man will be 1 in two weeks and he grabs himself ALL THE TIME! If he is in the bathtub, getting his diaper changed, whatever...he is all about the privates!! I was told by my mother and hubby (who has 4 brothers) that this is completely normal. They are just discovering a new body part!

Haha this is a really good topic! :] My 11 month old son has been feeling himself since he was about 5 months old. It's is completely natural and actually healthy. Hes exploring the parts of his body that he doesnt normally get to see. Babies are still learning to remember things. So after awhile(between diaper changes and tubbys) they tend to forget.
Though latel, my little one has been sticking his hand down into his diaper to feel if its still there. lol Its kind of funny, but i never discourage it unless hes wet or pooped.

Yep! It is boys being boys! My mom had three girls and she was shocked when she saw my son, she said we never did that. As soon as I pull his diaper off the hand goes down. I laugh and say "yes it is still there".

Yes!! my son does the same thing but i read in this book. the first year. it said its very normal for them to grab there genitals. they said to not tell them that its wrong or to tell them to stop. because they will feel ashamed or like its bad. But just tell them that its ok for them to touch theirself but only they can no one else can touch them there. so i just let my son do it whenever he wants because he's just discoverying eveyrthing about himself, just like he discover his ears or his eyes or any other body parts. its normal. but i hope the information i gave you will help you out. Good luck im going through the same thing

This is normal. My son just turned one yesterday and has been doing that for a while now. I actually read in a book about potty training not to discourage it to take the time to explain them what it is and if a father is around let the baby see dad pee and stuff so he learns what its for. Its just a babys way of learning about their body

I too am raising my first son and everytime his diaper comes off (bath or just changing) he finds his parts and pulls at it.
When I saw my nephew first do this he pulled so hard that I thought that he was going to hurt himself, but he didnt.
Now my son is doing, so i think via my nephew I learnt just to let my son go, as he is finding different parts of his body, even down there!

wow! good to hear my boy isn't just weird. He too reaches down when I am changing him so I have to be quick to wipe before his hand gets there. Thanks all. I am not so freaked out by it.

Oh! The joys of raising a boy! My soon to be one year old son went through a phase of grabbing his buddy as soon as the diaper was removed! He will still occasionally give it a grab just to check the goods *(my little man in training), but he for the most part has stopped doing this much as he has stopped having such a fascination with his toes. I'm sure he'll rediscover it all over again soon (and then again later, and then much more, just to make sure it's still there ;) There is nothing to worry about,.... he is curious, it's there and from what the baby books say, perfectly normal.

i learned rather quickly that its normal around 9 months my son would grab his boy part in the tub when his diaper is off. Any chance he gets he even takes his diaper off. So it must be a boy thing.

I think it's natural. My son grabs his goods every single bath time & daiper change. He grabs on to it for dear life. I heard it's part of them exploring themselves.

My son grabs his penis every time I change his diaper. The only time I don't allow him to is when Im trying to clean up after he poops or pees. It's normal for boys because it is part of their somewhat "self-discovery", like discovering their have fingers and toes. There is no malice attached to the touching so parents shouldn't make a big deal out of it.

My boy found his in the tub 3 months ago my father told me all boys find it eventually he has a lot of brothers and 2 sons so he should know he told me not to make a big deal about it and ignore it and eventually he will figure it is not a big deal and leave it be! Since I started that he does just that it is just another part and he would rather play with toys now

I am so glad someone posted about this! My son is 11 months old as well and any chance he gets he grabs at himself, I have to pull his hand away just to get a new diaper on! I'm pretty sure it's a boy thing, I always thought the 'adjusting' boys do was a learned behavior but I'm learning it's just a natural thing to do.

Raising my first boy, but I have a little brother and two younger boy cousins:
Im pretty sure every boy in the world does it! haha
My little guy will reach down and touch it when Im changing him. As long as hes not yanking on it or scratching I just let him go to town. Its a way of discovering their bodies, and from what my human sexuality teacher says, its perfectly healthy and normal.

I don't know if he's trying to grab it or it just itches but my son will scratch near the tabs at his diaper and will pull them off if he isn't wearing pants, then he'll scratch right in that area. I think it's just a boy being a boy.
