My daughter just turned 17 months old and only uses a few words all the time( no-no, up, num num, na na, nok nok, uh oh.).. while she can say a ton of words( swiper, go deigo go, mama, dada, ash, grandma, gampa, baby, yes, side ect) she doesnt, only randomly.. She also knows her animal noises but will not do them on comand only when she wants.. She totally understand what we say.. and is good at communicating what she wants to us.. She babbles all the time but nothing we can understand.. Im worried that she is behind..

My son just turned 17 months and he is not saying any words. I know that he understands words, but he doesn't SAY them. We were at the doctor's office and he saw a picture of Swiper. He help up his hand like he was saying, "Swiper no swiping," but didn't actually say any words, or try to say any words. I've been told by people who are experts in child development that I should wait until he's 2 and if he's not saying any words by then, then to talk to the doctor about it. His doctor said that he should be saying about 5 words. So... since your daughter actually CAN say words, but she chooses not to, I think she's probably just fine.

Nope. The more you talk to her using real words, the more she will start using them. If you are concerned, talk to her more. Easy fix :) My daughter knows about 30 words but uses some more often than other because they are her "everyday" words. Her newest word was Hot Dog because she watches Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in the am & they sing it at the end. SO CUTE!

She's not! My son is talking quite a bit, but he just started recently. I have a close friend who's daughter is the same age and she is hardly talking at all. Her pediatrician is not concerned and told her that she is on track. They all develop so differently. You already know that she understands alot and she'll start speaking more when she feels like it. There will come a point very soon when she'll talk your ear off so don't rush it!
