I was wondering if anyone has started on rice cereal yet and if so when did they start? My daughter will be 16 weeks Monday and I'm thinking of starting her. I'm exclusively breastfeeding now.

If you just warmed the bottle and the baby didn't eat out of it or suck on it at all than you can but if they did than you have 2 hours till you have to get rid of it.

Is it because she is wanting to eat too often? I have heard that you should try as hard as you can to wait till they are at least 6 monthes old because giving them solids too early can cause stomach trouble. Like trouble with digestion, gassiness and such. But if you want you could breast feed and than give some formula. Formula is more satisfying for babies because it is thicker. I would try that first and if it is cause they are eating very often/always hungry than try to give a tbsp. a day of rice cereal. Don't be scared of formula though both of my babies had to be on it because I couldn't produce enough milk for them and they are both very healthy and very happy. We use Parent's choice brand from Walmart it is just as good as any other brands and is a lot cheaper!

I put a tablespoon in my son's bedtime bottle to get him a little fuller at night and used to sleeping through the night. Did that for about a week and stopped putting it in his bottle after that! He's been sleeping through the night ever since(10 to 12 hours every night!)

My son weighed 8 pounds and 14 ounces when he was born and he gained 1 pound every week until he was 8 weeks old so I had to start him on cereal he was growing to fast and it wasnt me over feeding him! He just grew really fast so I started him one cereal when he was 3 weeks old and the doctor said it was fine that I started him that early as long as it wasn't making him sick. I also had to start baby food when he was only a month old instead of waiting til he was 4 or 5 months like your supposed to. Your daughter should do fine if you start her on cereal now.

Emly is 13 weeks old and I've jst started her, but very watered down. I didn't want to start her yet but she wasnt satisfied with the breastmilk and always seemed hungry. Now she is a lot happier, I give her 2 small feeds a day, about 2 tablespoons each time between breastfeeds.

I never put it in my son's bottle, I started straight for the bowl and spoon and he loved it! plus it was so fun and cute to watch him eat it! after a week or so, he was a pro at eating from a spoon, he'd see it and open his mouth for a bite, it was so cute!

girl, I started my son on cereal mixed with pears in it at 6 weeks, he is now 14 weeks and he's eating vegetables! my teacher who also had a baby the time as me also started her daughter on cereal at 6 weeks.... so not going to hurt them, and it didn't make them constipated or anything, no allergic reactions, nothing, he ABSOLUTELY LOVES IT! and he started sleeping through the night at 10 weeks :)

i started otmeal last week and now rice he loves it he is gonna be 4 months on the 1st you would think he was already eating before and a pro at it. the first time i put the spoon near his mouth it was wide open and he sawlloed no problem.

They tell us not to start untul 6 months for alergie reasons yeah right no kid can make it that long with out food lol.

I was told not to put it in the bottle by my ped cause it can cause chocking

Has for the breast milk if you dont warm it up its good for 24hrs

With my first daughter I started putting it in a bottle with her formula at 5 months but with my second I think I am going to have to start earlier, she is 3 months and already eating 6 oz every 3 hours or so, and it is only getting shorter. Guess that is what happens when they are almost 10 lbs at birth.

I gave her a few spoonfuls today and she absolutely loved it. I only wanted to give her a couple spoonfuls but she definitely would have taken more. No choking or anything. I think I will just give her a bit at night to start off. Thank you for all the responses. I did mix it with a bit of my warm breastmilk, I had a lot left over and tossed it, but it breaks my heart to throw away precious breastmilk!! Do you think it can be refrigerated for next day or is this a major nono because i warmed it a bit??

I also started feeding my daughter @ 3 mths. She was not satisfied with her 6 oz. bottles, so I used my motherly instinct and decided to give it a try. She absolutely loved it. In fact when I sit her in her seat (where I feed her) she seems to know whats coming! I started with rice cereal, then added some fruit with every spoonful. She is a very good eater!!

I started my daughter at 2 weeks, but thats only because she had reflux. The pediatrician told us to...i think now would be a great age to start. Especially at night so the baby sleeps longer.

My sons doctor started him on cereal when he was 8 wks because he would not sleep. Well we had to take him to Vanderbelt Hospital and when he was there they said not to give them cereal as a young age can cause food alergies when they grow older. So I didnt know what exactly to do so I only give him one to two bottles with light cereal at night.

Pediatricians recommend starting baby foods between 4-6mo. I have always waited till 6mo to feed my kids baby food because if you start too early studies show you may increase your childs chances of having food allergies and digestive problems later on. I just figured its not worth the risk.

My youngest baby is 14 weeks old and I have already started her on solids, although it was very upsetting when I went into community health and saw a nurse for a check up and she gave me a very hard time about starting her sooo early. I have 4 other children and started one of my sons on farex at 7 weeks because he needed it. he was very hungry and fast grower.everyone is different you need to do what is best for you xx

Yes... Don't let anyone make you feel bad because it is your decision but I wonder if these mums who give cereal way to early will feel guilt if they're babies end up with digestive problems or food allergies later in life? It may not be because of the cereal but research has shown it can lead to these things, I just wonder if it's worth the risk?

I started my Son on it around 6wks per the pediatrician, i was breast and bottle feeding due to work! it didnt seem to phase him or make him sleep any longer! but i dont give it to him all the time cuz i dont want him to luk like a sumo baby! he's already in the 93rd and 97th percentile for his age!

Yes. I started with a little amount in his bottle to get him used to it about 2 months. Now at a little over three months he is eating cereal from a spoon and 1st stage baby food in the afternoon. But I don't recommend this unless your baby has good head control and doesn't choke. My son loves it. But he only eats a few spoonfuls at a time. A small jar will last a few days.

I started my daughter at 12 weeks. She was eating 6 ounces of formula every 2 1/2 hours and never satisfied. I add 1 tablespoon of cereal now to 7 ounces of formula in her bottle. (It's very dilute and has no problems passing throught the nipple and my baby has had no choking issues.) She goes 5 to 6 hours between feedings and sleeps 10 to 11 hours per night. I think you have to do what's right for your specific baby. Don't let people make you think you're a bad mom for wanting to give your baby food earlier than recommended.

I started. I give it to my son in a bottle before bed, but in the morning he gets it a bit thicker and I spoon feed it to him. He takes it very well! A little messy, but no choking or anything like that. He actually enjoys being spoon fed! :)

I started it this week my daughter is 15wks. My ped told me to put it in her bottle but I did not want to do that so I just give it to her in the mornings....well try to I have only been able to get like two spoonfuls in her with all the spitting out and scooping back up but it is getting better. I have breastfeed until last week and now I follow up with a little formula and karo (drs orders) to help her go to the bathroom.
