Boy Potty Training Logistics?

I'm new at this potty training thing when it comes to boys. My LO just started asking to use the potty today when we were out of the house. So I took him to a public restroom, which he took to just fine. The problem was... when I sat him down on the "big" potty, it was tough to balance him. He held onto the handicapped railing on the side wall, but he really wasn't able to aim properly into the toilet.

His "little" potty that we use at home works great. But I'm just not sure how to make the big potty work for him.

Anyone have any words of wisdom???

I bought A "Potette", as my daughter cannot sit on the big public toilet, it's just too large. She can sit backwards, but not without her pants being taken all the way off, which means shoes have to come off, etc, and by that time the sanitary seat cover is LONG GONe, and her little hands are all over the nasty seat. The "Potette" goes on the adult toilet seat, or you can set it up to go anywhere if you are away from a potty (like the back of the car!). I bought it off of Amazon, and I love it. It's kind of big for in a regular purse, but we make it work.

you can buy those tiny potties that come apart in "steps", target has one that was like 20 bucks, and once he is too big for the "potty", it breaks off into pieces. the base turns over into a stool with two steps and the part that he sits on comes off and you can place it on the big toilet :)

Teach him to push it down as long as he's balanced on the seat. If he doesn't (or even if he does) have a dad or male role model that you trust in the picture there is nothing wrong with him sitting to pee. There are many grown men who pee sitting down because there's less chance of missing the mark. Which actually makes it easier for Mom when it comes to clean up :)

Another option is maybe try getting him to learn pee standing up. My son wouldn't pee sitting down because thats not how daddy did it. So when we are in public he just stands on my feet to make him tall enough to reach to toilet. and I also carry the fold up seat encase he has to poop and if he starts peeing while going poop I give him a gentle push to lean forward and if I have to help him aim his penis downwards.

Backwards - brilliant! Thanks, Rebekah!

Turn him around backwards. For the first several months of potty training I put my son on public toilets backward. If he bends over just a little it should help to point down, but if not at least it won't get all over you.

Also make sure his butt is sitting ON the seat. At this point, he doesn't need to have his butt hanging down into the toilet (especially if he's just peeing), so let him sit on the very back of the seat or front of the seat (if he's facing backwards). He most likely won't even need to hold onto anything if he's sitting ON the seat with his legs straddled.

Or if he's old enough, you could hold him in a standing position and just lean him over the toilet.

We used to have one of those folding travel potty seats, but I'm not sure how they work for a boy - there's no pee guard??? Any solutions to that prob? I've searched all over the internet for a good travel seat (that'll fit in my diaper bag) but haven't seen one yet.

They make a smaller potty seat that goes on a big potty and they make ones that fold up for travel. This worked great for my son. Just remember that they will do things in their own time and try not to push.
