my son is 5 1/2 months now and still only takes 4 1/2 oz of formula every 2-5 hours. I've tried giving him more but he just spits it up. I have started feeding him cereal and veggies in the evening though. He gets about 32-40oz of formula in a 24hour period. My doctor thinks thats too much but hey...he's hungry...I feed him. I have a friend whose baby is 2 months older and when he was 5 months he was drinking 9 oz every 4 hours and eating twice a day.

Hi Sarah,

I have a two year old little girl and a five month old little boy and I have them on almost identical schedules. My five month old gets up between 7 and 8 and has an 8oz bottle and a teaspoon of cereal. He then plays until about 10 when he dozes off for about 20 min. (my two year old doesn't do that anymore of course although some days I wish she would :) ) He then eats 8oz around 1145 and goes for a nap around 1230 or 1 and sleeps until 4ish. He then eats 8ozs at 4 and plays until about 530 when he dozes again for about 20 min. Around 715 he has 8oz and a tablespoon of cereal, then at 745 he goes to bed for the night.

I am lucky to have two good sleepers, but it took a lot of work to get him to nap in the afternoon. Is this your first? I would advise making them good afternoon nappers so if you have another you can set a similar schedule and have some "you" time. :)

my son is 5mths old and he doesnt get up until 9 and then I feed him some cereal with alittle bit of baby food fruit in it then he gets a bottle at noon takes a nap eats again at 3 anouther bottle at 5 I feed him half jar of baby food vegg and fruit and some watered down baby juice then anouther bottle at 7 then bath at 830 then anouther bottle at 9 before bed and i usually put some cereal in the formula at night to make it thicker and he sleeps all night til 9

Connor has 4-5 8oz bottles a day. He is eating baby food now so he is cutting back on his formula some. I tried cereal several times and he just won't take it. Connor sleeps all night long usually about 12 hours. He also takes a couple of naps a day, but they are short ones now. He has a 22 month old sister so sometimes he doesn't hardly nap at all.

my little boys usual routine in 8:30am first bottle 2 hours later i give him baby cereal and then he has a nap till lunch time

having a bottle every 3 - 4 hours

another nap around 4pm

6pm he has mashed vegetables

8pm bath time

then 8:30 - 9pm bottle goes down for the night

wow! My 5 1/2 month old only eats 5-6oz per serving and this is 4 times a day with some oatmeal cereal. Now i am wondering if that's enough.....

My son is 5 months old now and he has just started to sleep through the night, 10-11 hours now. We get up and have our play time in the morning and 2-2.5 hours later (around 8:30) he takes his morning nap which is around 1.5 hours and he also has an afternoon nap around 3:00 which is about 2 hours; although it depends on what we are doing that day on how long his naps are and how many. As he may have one around 12:30.
He is still nursing and has between 4-5 oz per feeding, normally every 3 hours. We have also just started cereal and apple sauce. He eats 1 tablespoon of cereal and 1 teaspoon of apple sauce, which I mix together, and he loves it. I only give him it once a day, at supper time, will be increasing the number of feedings of cereal next week as he doesn't like to have any in the morning right now :). He does have a bigger feeding before bedtime which is between 7-8:00pm and he gets at 6:00am

My son just turned 5 months old and his feeding schedule is this:
8 am - 8 oz bottle
Noon - 2 tb cereal + 2 tb water and then a 6 oz bottle
3 pm - 6 oz bottle
6 pm - 2 tb cereal + 2 tb water and then a 6 oz bottle
9 pm - 8 oz bottle
after this, he sleeps from about 930pm-7am!

my 5 month old son eats 7oz of formula at 7am, the 5oz plus 2tblsp of cereal with bananas at 10:30am, then 6oz with a few spoons of pears or applesauce, then at 2 he'll eat 7 oz, 5oz again at 6 plus some veggies, then 7oz again at bedtime...although most times he doesnt want food and still sleeps throughout the night. He takes 1 hour power naps sometime between all his feedings and then maybe a 2 hour nap after his 2pm feeding....hope that helps

My little one is 5 months also..

My litttle guy wakes up then drinks a 6 oz bottle then 2 hrs later rice cerel and fruit.....

takes a nap for about 1 hr then wakes drinks a 6 oz bottle ...... has his play tummy time, around 5ish he eats rice or oatmeal cereal........ with a bottle.... then bed time routine is a 6 oz bottle again.. and wakes occationally during the night

He was 1 month early........ at 4lbs 9oz Hes doing so great...

My lil guy with be 5 months on the 29th and we really don't have a set time schedule with when he gets bottle fed. The only time I really wake him if is he's gone about 12 hours between feedings, like his last night feeding to the next morning feeding, I get scared that he might dehydrated.

He usually wakes up between 7-9am and he gets 7oz and then goes back to sleep. Will wake up in 3-4 hours and I'll make him some rice cereal, enough that I use about 2oz of formula to mix it up and the about a 6oz bottle. I feed him his cereal at his 2nd feeding just because we're both more awake. He'll sometimes sit in his chair or on the floor to practice rolling and talk up a storm then sometimes go back to sleep till his next feeding. 3-4 hours later he gets another 6-7 oz bottle and might play some more and go back to sleep. Another 3-4 hours later he gets some veggies, about half a 2.5oz jar depending on how he's eating it. If he seems like like it I'll try and give him half if he's not a little less. Again he'll sometimes play some more or sleep. Then 3-4 hours later he'll get his last 6-7oz bottle and usually is down for the night between 9-11pm once he's settled down. Lately though he's been having another bottle around midnight.

I do 6 or 7oz depending how long it's been between feedings, if it's closer to 3 hours I'll give him 6 if it's closer to or over 4 hours he'll get 7oz. At his last appt his Dr said he would be concerned if he was going every 4 hours between feedings and only getting 6oz, so that's why his amount varies. I also write down on a piece of paper every time he eats, otherwise I forget how long it's been. I write down the time we start, how much he eats, not how much he gets, and then if he has a wet/poopie diaper. They had a sheet like this at the hospital and I just kept doing it.

My Bubba is 5 1/2 months old. She only started on Rice Cereal this week because I was worried about intollerances with feeding too early, she seems to be going okay with it.

6-6.30am - Morning Bottle/Back to Sleep (sometimes she will wake at 5am or so and she just snuggles in bed with me until feed time)
8.30-9am - Wake up and Play Time
9.30am - A few small spoons of Rice Cereal
10.30am - Bottle/Nap
11.00am - Wake up and Play Time
2.00pm - Bottle/Nap
2.30pm - Wake up and Play Time
5.00pm - Bottle/Nap
5.30pm  - Wake up and Play Time
7.30pm - Bath Time/Play Time with Daddy
8pm - Bottle and Bed

Thats a pretty standard day for us. How much she drinks depends sometimes it'll only be 100mls sometimes its 200mls... Before bed she always drinks her full 200mls.

I have a 5 month old.He eats more baby food than milk because he has reflux. He wakes up at 7am. I feed him 4oz of formula. I then feed him a cup of oatmeal/fruit mixed at around 8:30ish. He takes a nap around 9:30-10am. He then eats a cup of rice/veggies mixed at 11am. He then takes a nap at 12-2pm. At 2pm he eats a cup of rice/veggies mixed. I will switch off like he will have a green veggie then an orange veggie ext. He will take a nap at 4pm-5pm. At 5pm he will have another cup of rice/veggie mixed. At 7:30pm he will have an 8oz bottle and wind down for bed at 8pm. He sleeps during the night and wakes at 7am.

Forgot to add that he nurses 5 (sometimes 6) times a day. When he gets bottles he takes 6 oz.

Thanks everyone! My baby's schedule is something like this (a little different every day):
wake up around 6:30 and nurse, then play, and sleep around 8:30 for an hour. We follow this cycle throughout the day, with the addition of oatmeal cereal around lunch time. He goes to bed around 8:30.

He doesn't eat very much cereal, and I didn't know if that was normal or not. Around lunch he acts like he's still hungry after nursing, so I've tried to give him cereal before nursing, and I've tried it after, but it seems like all he really wants is a supplement bottle of formula. I know most babies his age eat more solids than he does. He is in the 75% for his weight, so I didn't know if it was normal for him to not show much interest in eating solids. Like I said, he gets a little oatmeal every day (rice really hurt his tummy) but he doesn't eat very much.

I have 5 month old twins and they are picky eaters. They wake up around 6:30 and will only take 2-3 oz of breastmilk. They play for some time and then take a nap at daycare. When they are in daycare (8:30 am - 4 pm) they only eat 6 oz each. They generally have 2 naps a day whenever they get tired. Once we get them from daycare they eat another 6 oz before bath time (7 pm) then eat another 4-5 oz before going to bed at 8. They take around 4 -6 oz at 11 and then my smaller one (the boy) wakes around 3 hungry but only eats 1-2 oz before sleeping. We have been concerned since they do not seem to eat very much compared to other babies their age.

My baby was born May 9th at 6 lb 1 oz two weeks early.. he is almost 5 1/2 months now.. He nurses about 8 to 9 times a day (estimating based on what I can pump out, probably 5 to 6 oz.) He gets a bowl of cereal in the morning aorund 10 am.. eats a veggie or fruit around 4 pm and then eats another bowl of cereal usually mixed with a fruit or veggie around 8 pm and goes to bed around 9:30. Usually takes about 4 naps 1 hour long. ( really not on schedule for naps, just falls alseep when he falls asleep).. I did same eatting schedule for my 2 year old also.. Will soon up the afternoon veggie or fruit to lunch and then introduce aother fruit or veggie around dinner time.

Wondering the same thing! My 5 month old daughter goes to bed around 8 every night and sleeps til 6:30- 7:30, but wakes at least once in between. She seems hungry (formula fed), so we give her a small oz bottle and she goes right back to sleep. Trying to figure out how much more food she needs during the day and when to allow her to sleep all night. We've been giving her cereal for several weeks now, but just in the evening before bed. Just started to break it up between breakfast and dinner today and started on squash (YUCK!) yesterday. I've heard other moms say they don't remember giving anything but a bottle in the morning, which I would love, but then what - have daycare give her something other than a bottle during the day? Suggestions? Thanks!

Zoe is 5 months and bottlefed. She usually wakes between 6 and 7am. When she is hungry, she now gets solid food which consists of 4 TBs of oatmeal and 2 oz of a fruit. Then, in about an hour or so from when we started with the solids, I'll give her a bottle of 7oz - but she probably won't eat the whole thing. If she's been up for about 3 hours, she'll go down for her nap. She usually takes two naps a day - and can stay away for about 3 hours at a time. One of her naps is usually a long nap (~ 1.5hrs) the other is usually 45 minutes. She gets 4 bottles total dispersed throughout the day of 7 oz - but she may not drink all of it esp. if it is following solids. She gets another solid food feeding at dinnertime around 5pm or so that consists of 4 TB rice cereal and 2 oz of a vegetable. Then, about an hour later - bottle before bed. I like to get her in bed between 6:30 and 6:45.

Hi! Matilda is 5months and breast fed. We wake up at 7am and eat aprox. 5oz then play, back down for nap around 8:30 then up at 10:30a. 5oz again and play/walks in the park then 5oz again with small amount of oatmeal cereal (just started today) then down for nap at 1p. Back up at 4pm 5oz, then 5oz at 6p then 5oz at 7:30p then down for the night. :) We love the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child it has been god sent!!!

Hi, my daughter ia 5 months also and she wakes up at 6, i feed her a 7-8oz bottle of formula and then its play time with her 2 year old brother, then she drinks another 7-8oz at 10 and goes for a nap until about 11:30, then she drinks 7-8oz at 1:30-2 and goes for a nap until 3....then she drinks 7-8oz around 6-7 and has a bath and goes to bed and then we start all over again..lol....sometimes its a little different, it depends if she wakes up at 6, sometimes its 7..... we tried rice cereal the other day but i dont think she's totally ready for it yet, she kept pushing it out, so i think that reflex is still there a little bit...were going to try again this weekend....We've given her MumMums and she loves those, not sure if you know what i mean, but there a rice cookie/cracker, there kind of meant for teething and they melt in her mouth.....hope this helps, what is your baby's schedule like? i actually posted the same kind of question not to long ago..lol.. =)

this may sound bad but we have no set routine. whe he gets up i feed him baby food for breakfast nurse him for lunch he usually lays down for an hour around one, he has a 22 month so he doesn't get as much sleep as he should. i will then feed him a late dinner so he sleeps better. i nurse him through out the night and between lunch and dinner.

i feed him baby food because no matter what i mixed with the ceral with wouldn't take it!

My daughter is 5 months. I breastfeed. She eats when she wants, but it's normally every 2-3 hours. She takes about 4 oz per feeding (which I only know b/c I've been able to weigh her before and after). I haven't started solids yet. Naps are another story. She'll fall asleep while nursing and stay asleep any where from 30 minutes to 2 hours. She usually takes about 3 naps a day but they vary in length.
