My little girl (she's 2) picks at her nails and the skin around them a lot, boardering on obsessive. Her nails on her thumbs are about half way down and skin around her nails is all pulled off, sore and red. She is the same with her toes nails. I don't know where she gets it from I never pick my fingers or nails

My question is does anyone else's kids do this and does anyone know how to stop it or does anyone have any ideas that might stop it?

Hi there, my son picks at his fingernails. It developed into chewing on the skin around the nails, and then to actually biting his nails. I use the 'no bite' nail polish from sally hanson and it seems to help along with reminders to keep his hands out of his mouth.

If this continues to be a problem, you might want to look at different stressors in your child's life. Even if you don't think it would be stressful, she might. For example, if she is normally a quiet girl and the house gets noisy around a certain time of day, it could increase her stress level just knowing that time will happen.

I would also enlist the help of your pediatrician or a counselor as this typically is an OCD or tension related behavior.

Hi Hayley, I have a 21/2 year old he doesn't pick on his nails but he does picks his nose and sometimes to much so that it leaves a soar. I can't watch him every secound so i decided to try to put gloves on him and it helps alot some days are better then other, or if you have sports tape(that they use to wrap anckles with) i know it sounds wierd but if you lightly type around each finger so it's not cuting the blood circulation off of course maybe that will help.
