Hello May 2009 Babies Moms!! I am contemplating giving my baby girl fresh milk as of now..... has anyone replaced the powder milk already with fresh milk? Just wondering if it is okay to do so now, or if I am really supposed to wait until she is officially 1 next month.

I sent a message to my daughter's pediatrician about this very thing earlier in the week. I've been nursing, but my milk supply seems to be getting lower and lower. My question was whether it was okay to switch her to whole milk now or if I had to switch her to formula for the next month.

Here was her response:

"I strongly recommend breastmilk or formula until age one, mainly because whole milk in comparison is less nutrient dense and is a poor source of iron. By age one, babies should be ingesting enough iron rich foods to make whole milk ok. If she is starting to wean I would recommend adding formula until age one to bridge the gap. IF you really wanted to avoid formula and did choose to give whole milk before age one I would only do so at age 11mo and ONLY if her weight is healthy and she is still breastfeeding at least twice daily. Those are my "rules" but other Pediatricians may say differently! Hope that helps!"

I started introducing milk at 10 months, he isn't solely on full milk yet, but I keep adding more each week..started with half milk, half formula in a bottle, now he gets one bottle of milk per day and one glass per day the rest is formula or water...I decided to wean him, because one of my other children didn't adjust well when I put them straight on milk at 12 months...he doesnt seem to be having any trouble..he will be solely on whole milk by the time he is 1 year or when my current stock of formula runs out, which ever comes first..good luck!

When I was going to put my daughter on whole milk her pediatrician said that I had to wait until she was 1 becasue the milk can irritate the lining of her stomach. We started when she turned 1 and have had no problems.

i have i do half formula(4oz) and half cows milk(4oz) and it hasnt hurt my 11 month old at all she's just fine no rashes have popped up no constipation maybe you could try that i was scared to at first but i was kinda forced to try it because we get WIC and they only give a certain amount of formula cans to me a month and obviously they dont understand babies drink more formula than they eat food or atleast mine does she's a monster when it comes to formula she loves it

My sons doctor told me to start introducing milk at 6 months. my son hardly drink formula now. since your baby should almost be one its fine because once they turn one no more formula well if your on WIC.

i was told to wait until about 14 months before changing over totally. at 12 months, change one feed (not morning or night) to a cows milk feed and after a few days if there is no reaction, then change another feed. im planning on doing it gradually. The formula has too many nutrients in it and unless a baby has a totally nutritionally balanced diet, formula is best. :)

I have given my son regular whole milk every other mom i have talked to and know has already put there child on whole milk so i dont think that it will hurt your daughter any my son seems to be doing fine no side effects.. but i eased him into it by doing half milk and half formula but however you decide to do it im sure she will be fine
