TUMS work for me. The extra strength ones even better than the regular ones and the sooner they're taken at the first sign, the better. Eating slowly and smaller portions helps sometimes but I swear AIR gives me heartburn. ;)

I'm am HOPING heartburn goes away after the baby is born...

a teaspoon of white vinegar will make it go away but it tastes awful. Also if you eat an apple it has something in it that neutralizes the acid. They both worked for me. If you want actualy meds. my doctor told me to take pepcid ac

My doc told me to take Pepcid AC I started taking it before meals and before bed and haven't had any trouble since. Also not eating anything after about 8pm helped.

My midwife prescribed "protonix"... I have the generic brand.  I haven't had ANY heartburn since I started taking it, and I've been feeling MUCH better!

I never had heartburn before pregnancy- it can be a real pain. More so because I get it bad when i eat chocolate! :(
I just glug Gaviscon now, or Boots own brand stuff is just as good.

When tums and Rolaids didn't work for me, my dad who constantly has issues w/ heartburn and of course he isn't  pregnant, LOL; told me to drink a glass of white milk very slowly. Let it run down your throat and coat your stomach. I'm telling you it has done wonders for me! Also, I have gestational diabetes and i've learned that when I have too much sugary stuff I get heart burn, so I stay away from tha candy and drink a glass of milk (doesn't have to be huge) every night and that helps!

Quoting J'Lynn:

good question but i have no idea, when ya find out let me know cuz water gives me horrible heartburn...not kidding

People think I'm crazy when I tell them this but its true--water gave me heartburn with both pregnancies!  I found putting a slice of lemon in it helped reduce the heartburn when i drank my water.

With my first son, drinking milk or eating a small spoonful of ice cream relieved the heartburn for hours afterwards.  I used tums occasionally, too, but 2% and up milk worked best.  This time around, milk only worked while I was actually drinking it--once I was done, back the heartburn came :\  And tums left this horrible metallic taste in my mouth and i couldn't stand to use them anymore.  The heartburn became constant and nauseating and now I'm on prilosec--within about 12 hours of taking the first dose, I was heartburn free!  I think if my doc told me to stop using it, I might just sit and cry until she lets me keep it LOL  My heartburn might have been so bad because I also have an inflamed gallbladder and my general surgeon told me really severe heartburn can be a side effect from that, too.

Sleeping elevated has helped me tons! I was waking up a few time during with heartburn but a couple of stacked pillows has taken care of it for me and not drinking water right before laying down. I hope you find something that works cause it sure is annoying.

Hi, I live in the U.K - I visited my doctor about my heartburn and he has give me a large prescription of Gaviscon Advance Liquid - It's totally safe a really nice peppermint flavour and oh does it work well - it's amazing. He told me to guzzle away, as much as I needed. I started off taking double doses for the first couple of days but now I just have a glug from the bottle before bedtime.

My doc suggested any of the over the counter heartburn medications will work.  I only take it once a day... usually in the evenings when it seems I have the most trouble.  It seems to hold me over though the night.

extra strength tums! before I was pregnant I put tabasco sauce on everything and ate pickled peppers out of the jar and had never had heartburn and now I get it from water and saltines... extra strength tums are the only thing that work for me. good luck!

it's normal, and it's due to the fact that baby is pushing on EVERYTHING, including your intestines and stomach...also the hormone progesterone can cause the valve between the stomach and the esophagus to relax, and that makes it easier for the acid to escape the stomach and drive you nuts!  This time around it has been pretty horrible for me.  The best thing I have done to relieve it, is taking the Rolaids Soft Chews.  I like the cherry flavor best, but it also comes in vanilla.  I can't stand the texture of the chalky stuff, so these have been a lifesaver, and provide instant relief.  Some nights I only take one, but I never have to take more than two.  Another thing to do, aside from finding out which foods trigger it, is to try not to eat for about two or three hours before bedtime.  I know this can be really hard when pregnant, but if you find yourself hungry, go for a glass of milk or another acid-free food.  Unfortunately it probably won't go away, but hopefully this will help! :)

I usually just take 2 tums or rolaids. Or sucking on a peppermint candy always works for me!

I've had issues as well with this and here's what worked for me:

First off stay away from acid foods like tomato sauce or citrus. Then I usually pop a few TUMS!! But my Dr. also prescribed Pepcid (which can be purchased OTC)

The final thing I did when I was pregnant with my son was to sleep at an angle with your head higher then your stomach. What worked the best to do this was either a wedge pillow or sleeping in a lazy boy chair.

Best of luck hun!!

Tums is my friend. Unfortunatly from what I know there is no real cause for the heartburn in pregnancy (unless you count the wivestale that says heartburn means a head of hair!). Some foods do trigger it more than others however.
Generally take some tums after eating and that can help prevent the heartburn feeling. GL.

Hi ...I have had problems with heartburn... you won't be able to get rid of it entirely but I find after the suggestions I have heard that Tums works well. I use Tums when I'm at my worst. Hope this helps.
