Hi Precious,

I started my lil mama on cereal during her fourth month and she did pretty good. Plus, I've noticed that all of my friends who are mothers long before me (I'm a late starter) started giving their babies baby food around that time and their all fine as well. I just feel that it's best to see how your little ones tummy reacts then you'll be albe to tell if you should waite. However, I'm confident he'll do just fine. Try some apple sauce, this is always a winner.

With my first, my son started at 4 1/2 mos, i started with all of the cereals and eased him into the food. You know when your baby is ready if he is opening his mouth when the spoon is coming. With my 6 month old she just started eating 3 weeks ago, so each baby is different.

At 4months babys can have rice cereal n baby food. They can also ahve mashed veges like sweeet potato n pumpkin. Dont feed mashed banana yet as it can cause constipation.

I started my Daughter on Rice Cereal at 21/2 months and at 3 months we moved to Veggies and then after awhile Fruits. at her 4 months old check up I told my doctor what Had happened, and that Kenley was not getting full on bottles whatsoever, and she told me I had made the right choice. As long as She can sit with Support, It can be up to the mother's better judgement. Kenley now eats rice cereal for Breakfast and right before bed. and a fruit and veggie for lunch and dinner. Just rememeber to ALWAYS start with a veggie first, and only use the stage one baby foods and use them for 4 days before you start a new one to know if your baby has an allergy. Hope this helps.

YES! Their little digestive systems are just not ready yet. If you are breastfeeding, then that is all they need for sure. I would hold off until at least 6 months, and longer if you can. Research shows that the longer you wait to introduce solids, the lower the risk of food allergies and obesity later in life.

My son was on rice cereal at 3 weeks old because of severe reflux. Putting the rice in his formula was something we were ordered to do. Then around 3 months he started eating it off a spoon. Our pediatrician started him on baby food at 4 months, plus he was showing the typical signs that he was ready. I was told cereals, yellows, greens, then meats. Greens should not be started first.

My son is 4.5 months. We tried it with him a couple weeks ago but I felt like he maybe wasn't ready (or maybe I wasn't ready, I'm not sure). He is a big eater but he's also a chunky baby and I was afraid he'd gain a ton of extra weight he doesn't need. We're going to give it another go in a little bit but I'm in no rush. The formula is holding him for now.

My baby is 4 1/2 months and started eating rice with her bottle when she was about 3 1/2 months. But one reason she started early was because she had acid reflux and need the cereal to help absorb. If we were in a hurry or was on the go and couldn't spoon feed her we would put it in her bottle. Fast flow nipples do not help. We ended up cutting a small hole in the nipples which was the worst idea. The baby gets to much air and drinks her bottle wayy to fast. I do give my baby cereal out of a bowl and I had baby apple sauce to give it flavor, Every once in a while I will give her a couple spoons of veggies. Her doctor also said not to start baby food until I see her first tooth or around the 6 month range. I'm so excited to start her on it though.

I do give my daughter baby food from a jar, having had a child 18 years ago when the advice was to wean at 3 mths it didnt seem a problem to do it with Emelia at 4 mths, also being born at 10lbs and a large baby she needed something more than milk, I do only feed her once a day at the moment, I find early evening the perfect time for her as she settles more at night.

try a 1/2 jar of prunes in the morning with 1 tsp of oatmeal before his breakfast bottle and that may do the trick. my boy had such terrible constipation before adding food, but now he is like clockwork and i do this every single morning. you can also give a mixture of 2 oz water and 2 oz pear juice throughout the day which also makes them regular and he will LOVE the sweet treat!

my doc started my baby boy on oatmeal for one week at four months then one week of barley then yellow veggies, prunes, pear juice and finally green veggies. wait on anything too sweet (fruits) so they dont develop a sweet tooth and later shy away from veggies and protein meats, which later turns into those children who will only eat french fries all day long. you dont want a picky eater when they get bigger!!!

They say from 4-6 months is okay to start on solids, but at the recommendation of our doctor and my personal preference, I will wait to start any solids at 6 months. The baby is getting all he needs from breastmilk or formula at this stage, so there really is no need to rush it.

I say yes.....well as far as cereal goes, I wait until 6 month to do fruits and veggies and I start out with veggies first, cuz if you start with that sweet fruit and then try to give them veggies chances are they are not gonna want them.

I definitely think every baby is different that is for sure. My son turned 4 months on May 22. I started rice cereal at 3.5 months and he is going great with that. I tried carrots the day after his 4 month check up and they constipated him so bad. It was really sad so I decided to wait until 5 months and will try again. I think his little digestive system just wasn't ready yet.

it depends. i'd talk to your pedi about it, every child is different.

i gave my son organic banana first foods baby food the day before he turned 4 months and he loves it. i give it to him once a day and i breastfeed for the rest of the time, on call. 4 days later i tried pears and he hated them, the taste is bitter. then today i tried apple and he hated that too so i'm sticking with the banana.

all of these are organic btw.

My daughter is 4months old and is showing signs of needing more than just milk. I have a health visitor weaning visit but she did tell me over the phone that they dont recommend anything other than milk unless they are over 17wks. I am just giving my daughter some baby rice before her bottle at lunch time untill I have my proper visit, but have already noticed the difference. Maybe try just baby rice for a while? If you are unsure I would definately speak to your health visitor.

Personally I think so my baby is 4 months old and she has had solids since she was 1 moth old. not only that it is up to you and what you say base it off is she/he sitting up with support or look it up online to see what you think

my daughter just turned 4 months old i red in the nhs book that i have is that the guide lines is not 2 give any thing other then milk 4 the 1st 6 months but sum babys will need more sooner you just have 2 look 4 the signs 2 know if ther ready like them being intrested in wat u and u family r eating. nt being ful afta drinking a full botle. since iv bin giving my child a bit of baby rice in the morning then 4 lunch she now has a few spoon fuls of other baby food and sum juice, she now sleeps through the night.

I was doing a childcare course and one of the things we were told is that "children under the age of 6 months cannot properly digest anything other than breast milk or substitute (Formula)."

When your bubs is 6m/o it is ok to start but start with very liquid foods such as a rice cereal with a lot of formula/breast milk to liquefy it.

[deleted account]

At our 4 month checkup my Dr. advised to try to wait until 6 months if you're exclusively breastfeeding. She said if the baby is on formula then any time after 4 months you can start with rice cereal. Cereal should be from a bowl with a spoon though, not from a bottle, or babies tend to get overfed when they drink their food. At first they will have a tongue reflex to push the food out, but they'll learn, and when the baby is good at keeping it in, then you can move on to jar foods. They say to start with veggies so that the baby doesn't get used to sweet fruits and refuse the veggies, but I don't know, my older daughter loved veggies and still does. Peas and sweet potatoes are sweet tasting to babies. I'm anxious to feed my son too, it's fun to start those messy spoon fed meals, but I'm gonna try to wait another month after encouragement from my Dr. that the breastmilk in enough for now.

At my last appointment my pediatrician actually said to start her as soon as she really seems interested. I say go ahead and try it out. She also said that all of the new research on babies and development says to start them on meats. I gave my first child avacado and turkey for her first foods. If he isn't interested in eating solids then just wait.

My son is 4 months old too and the doctor said it's ok to start him on baby food. He said to make sure he gets the same food 3 days in a row to check for allergies. He also said not to give him peas or meats yet. The lighter color foods are easier for babies to digest. Hope this helps.

hello there, i started our daughter on solids when she was 2 an half/3 months old as she is a hungry baby and she thoroughly enjoys it!! just don't tell your health visitor, i got told off as they said you have to wait until your child is 6months but my sister in law did that with her son (my nephew) and he is a pickle for eating and trying different textures! so i say its fine, just try giving him solids in small amounts and once a day until he gets used to it and then increase amounts and how many times a day!

My daughter just turned 4 months, when we went for her 4 month checkup her doctor said she is perfect in every way and it is fine for her to start having some rice cereal and some fruit or vegi...1st foods that is. Also he said to stick with what ever food for about a week to be certain there will be no allergy....he actually told me if she is interested she could even try real mashed potatoes and gravy!!! Making sure the consistency is right for her of course. It was odd for me I have a 16 and 11 year old that has always seen this same doctor and I dont recall him telling me to feed them mashed potatoes...I trust this doctor though...he was in practice with my pediatrician when I was born and a child....Im just shy of 40! I guess it depends on if your son is showing any interest or doesnt seem satisfied with just breastmilk or formula...Ive started mine on a teaspoon of rice cereal mixed with formula and a bit of banana. You can tell when they are not interested/finished... Hope this helps.

Well, I started my son on rice cereal at 3 months, cause he just wasn't getting full enough. Plus I know that at your 4 month check up they give you the go ahead to start cereal & then veggies. You start with one vegetable at a time for about 5 days to make sure there is no allergic reaction. But make sure your child has reached the milestones that the dr. would allow him to eat food. ie: supported sitter & can lay on his belly & hold his head up or push up with his arms. You should really ask your doctor. Also with the rice cereal it may make them a little constipated at first. They say to only spoon feed it. My son took it in the bottle the first couple of weeks now I make it really runny & spoon feed him. Good Luck!!!

No just rice or oatmeal. He said to wait on wheat cereals, but I cant remember how long he said. maybe 6 months? But wheat is usually the one with most allergic reactions

well you dont give them strawberries or the high rate allergie foods just the basics...my doctor said it was ok but i dont think she was thrilled...but my baby was hungry....i was eating cereal at like 3 weeks cause i left the hospital drinking 8 oz...hungry babies need more...ask your doctor and just tell them that you baby is demanding more...

I have a four month old too, and just started him on rice cereal at the advice of his pediatrician. Every child is different, but as long as they can hold their head up and sit with support, they could be ready. Feed it with a spoon though, most doctors discourage putting cereal in a bottle. My pediatrician told me to try cereal for a week or two and then move on to orange vegies, then green, and fruit last. Only introduce one new food at a time and give it about four days before the next new food. Good luck

i started my daughter on rice cereal at 6 weeks because she was drinking an 8 oz bottle and still crying for food 10 minutes later...that was after feeding off me for an hour....i gave it to her at night and she started sleeping through the night again....all babies are different its pretty much your decision....your baby will let you know if they arent ready for it yet...

My doctor said it was okay to give my daughter, Kathryne, who's 4 months old rice cereal before she goes to bed to help her sleep through the night. I have chosen not to, since she only wakes up once and breastfeeding at night is a natural way to stay infertile.

[deleted account]

I would talk to your child's doctor. We just had our 4 month check-up and I don't plan on starting any solids until at least 6 months. You can start rice cereal any time after 4 months. My doctor just told me they are leaning towards the 6 month age range to start any other foods. If you do rice cereal, put it in a bowl. Most doctors will discourage putting cereal in a bottle.

i was very curious if i should do that for my daughter as well because her bottles arent really filling to her i added some cereal to her bottle but its still not enough i was about to ask some mommies but we might need to ask the pediatrition and see if its ok esp to expand what our babies are going to eat :)

It really depends. How much is he eating right now? If he is eating more than average or cant seem to stay full you can try a little rice cereal in his bottle of formula. You will need to pick up a heavy flow nipple to do so. If you want to try baby food start him on green veggies only, no meats or fruits yet, and don't over-do it.
