In need of a second opinion

I really do want to see an outside specialist since my husband is in the Army and I am dealing with doctors that talk me in circles. Our son is due May 30th. He is our first baby. I had a serious ovarian fibroid tumor cut away from my uterus along with my left ovary and fallopian tube removed just about 2 years ago. Doctors at Madigan Army Medical Center are trying to tell me that since I have this history, they don't want me to go into labor. They want to to an amniocentesis when I am 7 & 1/2 months along to see if the baby's lungs have fully developed. If so, they want to take him out that same day by c-section. All of this to me sounds so risky since he would be so early. I want to know, if it is such a dire need for them to take him early, why am I not considered a high risk patient and why since I have had both preterm labor and an amniotic fluid leak already am I not seeing a high risk doctor? Anyone have some advice?

I am 30 weeks now and had a 3d ultrasound yesterday. There is no way a would let them take her now. She only weigh's 2.5 lbs. Do not let them take your child!!!! You dont have to get nasty, you need to be firm. Your husband is property of the military and has to do what he is told. YOU d your baby are not!!!!! Remain respectful but do nt give in!!!

7 1/2 seems really early.  I am at a loss as to why you would not be seeing a high risk doctor already, I thought any woman with pre term labor was taken into a high risk catagory...  I would at least call another doctor or nurse and get a second opinion.  That is a risky situation...and I'd want to double check on their facts and make sure they're really doing what's best for the baby not what's easiest for them.

When it comes right down to it I wouldn't care if I did have to pay out of pocket. I just have to becareful with how nasty I get with them since they can report me to my husband's commander and he can get in serious trouble for me mouthing off. If I had it my way, I would tell them all to screw themselves and I would apply for medicaid or something. Madigan is HORRIBLE and is famous for making serious mistakes. I feel like I am about to be one of them.  I just need to find someone there that will listen to me. I never see the same doctor twice so its always a hastle getting everyone on the same page and nothing gets done about it. Not only that, everyone in that place acts like I am crazy for being so concerned. I am just going to put my foot down and say no to the amnio and no to the c-section until I hit 36 weeks. They can haul me out of there for all I care, I don't want them making any mistakes with my son, who is a miracle to begin with.

Why take him so early ? Why not just take him via c-section about 35-38 weeks ? It gives your baby a chance to develop a little more. And they can always give you drugs to make sure you don't go into labor. My SIL was on them for both her pregnancies.

I would seek a 2nd opinion. The longer he's in the womb the better off he is. Just tell them that you want a 2nd opinion. Don't let them bully you. This is your child's well being you are talking about.

If it were me, I would seek a 2nd or even a 3rd opinion even if I had to pay out of pocket.

I live in Olympia close to Fort Lewis and I have heard some crazy stuff about Madigan. I have a friend who's hubby is deployed and she explained that she needed a day time DR appt. for an MRI so she could take the kids to day care... They scheduled her for a late nite appt.

I'd always trust your gut--that's why you have it. If you're uneasy about the situation then make sure your current doctor knows you are. They say the "squeaky wheel gets the oil..." So, speak up and let them know how you feel.

Well I have Tricare insurance and would need a referral to go to any civilian doctor let alone a specialist. As long as I can get a referral, I would not have to worry about paying for it since I do not have any co-pays that I know of at least. I just have to worry about them bullying me out of the referral. I have to be so careful with how I deal with them because if I say something they don't like they can get my husband in trouble and or demoted for basicly nothing. I am really starting to feel trapped as I know it may take a month or more to get in to see a good specialist and I am nearing my 7th month of pregnancy. I am sure I have the right to refuse the amnio, but I am just so confused because what if I really need to have it? Gosh!

Can you afford to see another doctor (Ob/Gyn) for that second opinion??? They may want you to come back since you would be a new patient, but maybe if you can bring ALL!!! (EVERYTHING from your past history) they would be willing to at least tell you what they think. Honestly, I would even ask  any Registered nurses you may know. They often do & know more than some doctors. (Sad to say, but it's the truth) 7½ months seems to early. That is ASKING for lung problems, possible developemental issues, and besides that, if it is SO critical like you said, why wouldn't they have already dismissed you from there care and sent you to a HIGH risk specialist??? I think you need at least a second, if not third opinion. Good Luck to you!
