My boy is 7 months now, and has 3 teeth.. Is it ok to start giving him his food a little less mushed? and maybe some soft crisps aswell for a treat?
Also, can he have cows milk yet?

Quoting Denise:

You could try the "baby-led weaning" method. Basically, you cut up their foods (like bananas, avocados, and other mushy or steamed foods) into strips that they can grab. The theory behind it is that if their hands can get it to their mouths, they can eat it without choking. It works for us, and good thing because my 7 month old doesn't like pureed food!

I find this method so much easier than making purees and cheaper than buying jars of baby mush. Soft crisps are probably not a good idea though they generally have a very high salt content.

my son loves fingerfoods and he turned 7 months on Dec 9th. I still give him formula in the morning and in the evening just to make sure he gets all the nutrition he needs. I feed him well cooked vegetables and soft fruits. I also give him Mum mum rice rusks. My doctor told me that he is not allowed wheat til 9 months (but every doctor is different). A little bit of cows milk mixed into food is ok but not as a drink until 12 months. This is information I was given by my doctor but I would advise you to talk to yours because every baby is different (my giant :P has been eating baby food since four months and solid foods since 5-6 months)

ive given my boy a bit of toast. if you are worried about it try giving him a bit of crust off a cob loaf or some type of bread like that, that is sorta harder i also cook thick chips in the oven for my partner and i and my son will chew on one of them aswell. as long as you watch him and watch how much he bites off then he should be fine. if he bites off a big chunk just put your finger in and scoop it out,

I have been giving my daughter rice crackers and puffs for a few months now. As long as it can melt in his mouth, then it's great to try. Watch him to make sure that he doesn't bite large piece.

no milk till a year +, but all gerber snacks come with an age recommendation on them. I try everything myself first to see how fast they disolve etc, and give whatever I feel comfortable with. just use your best judgement and as long as you are with your baby when he/she is eating, you'll be fine! my son loves Puffs!!!

yeah i have tried toast and even round crackers with my 7 month old, it helps them learn to eat different foods, just keep an eye on them when they are eating - but they just mush it up and suck on it anyway.
no cows milk till 12 months old

Try Mum mums! My 7 month old loves them! He refuses to eat any other foods.. so I tried them and he really enjoys them and they are safe (they melt in their mouths)!

I give my 7 month old mushed up pasta (over cooked) as well as little bits of bread, mushed up bananas and such. I would wait till they have more teeth and are closer to 1 year old though. And make sure you don't give them Peanut Butter or Honey though. PB too early can cause allergies and their systems are not strong enough to digest honey. Wait till they are about 1.5 years old with those items. There are special netted feeders you can get at your local super market to put solid type foods in so they can suck on it and chew on it but will NOT get big chunks of food they can't handle!! It's like 4 or 5 dollars. Good luck!

Sandra, thanks for your response to my post.
I've been giving my little girl solids for just over 1 month now (she'll be seven months on Monday). According to my doctor, between 7 and 9 months I can start to add to the pureed foods. The doc said that even though she doesn't have teeth yet, the baby will be able to gum it. I've tried teething biscuits and find she does gum it and hasn't swallowed a whole chunk yet (I was nervous too). Other things that the doc told me that I can try are baby pasta (pastina), cheese, toast, scrambled eggs, etc.

We already give our daughters the biter biscuits & ziewback (sp?) toast and they don't have any teeth, because they pretty much melt in their mouth but are very messy. And babies under a year aren't supposed to have anything but breast milk or formula.

I've been giving him baby food from 4 months and the doctor's are pretty happy with that.

He's a very hungry baby, he likes 'chewing' his baby food (the mush)

I've just been too nervous to try anything else that could have a possibily of making him choke
