my son just turned 5 months old & i want him to get the swine flu vaccine as soon as possible but my husbands family is criticizing us for being too careful with him. i dont take him around anyone who might be sick even if its just a little runny nose, i use antibacterial spray & wipes around our house & even on public surfaces like the grocery cart. i think if he got the swine flu vaccine i wouldnt have to worry so much but they say i need to expose him to sick people & germs to help develop his immune system. i agree to a certain point but with all the children now dying of the swine flu i do not want to take that chance. so my question is - are you getting your baby vaccinated? or i am i being overly cautious???

They are encouraging pregnant women to get the vaccine. Discuss your feelings with a DOCTOR not just a health care worker

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/v... thats a great information sheet about the safety of these new vaccines and how they plan to monitor them. :) im not going to immunize my 5 month old, but both me and my boyfriend will get both, as we are in 2 out of 5 of the target groups. :) its an important desicion, talk about it for sure!

I've personally never had a flu shot and I couldn't even tell you the last time I had the flu, same with my boyfriend.. So we were in a huge debate whether or not to have our son get the flu shot & the H1N1 shot. We decided that we aren't going to have him get the H1N1 shot since our friend in the health field informed us that a pregnant mother or a woman planning to become pregnant in the next 5 years shouldn't get it because it can have negative effects on a fetus... Our thought immediately was if it can do that to a fetus what is it going to do to a 6 month old baby? There seem to be negative and positive things about it but it's just not for us.

It's completely a personal choice and I believe that every mom should make the decision based on what she believes is best for her own child.

That could not be MORE WRONG!  Get the facts.

I don't think I'll get the flu shots for my boys because I'm concerned about the mercury base that is used to adminiter the shots. I believe that the increased use of these mercury bases in shots weakens children systems. When the national association of peditritions recommended increasing recommended shots for children, an increase in autism was also shown in children. (Robert Kennedy Jr. has written several artical on this subject approx. 5 years ago.) the majority of vaccinations no longer use the mercury base to adminster the medication but flu vaccines do because of mass production.

I don't think vaccinations are bad, but I believe they are given too early. My boys were preemies so while they are 5 months old, they present at about a month to two months behind, based on their behaviors. We'll try to wait out this flu season.

Just wanted to say again to ask your doctor as many questions as you can think of. Every year it's a new virus. That's why we have to get a flu shot every year.

thanks sara!  your explanation helped me understand why its in a separate shot than the regular flu vaccine.  i spent too much time researching & reading up yesterday & became a little frazzled with some of the comments i read.  its nice to read something truly informative:-)

I'm not getting my kids vaccinated w/the swine flu shot for the main reason being that it is a brand new virus & vaccine that they have not tested! Who knows what the long term effects will be. I do know that they have to be at least 6 months old in order to get it if you really want to get it.

We are not doing the H1N1 for the simple fact that it is a brand new disease and vaccination. -- They have not tested it on ANYONE so who knows what it MAY do to people/kids/infants. -- But, I do know for sure that they have to be a minimum of 6 months to receive the flu or swine vaccination. -- If my kids were in day care, or we were around a lot of people consistently I may think about it more, but for now we are not going to. -- Good Luck.

My understanding of the vaccination is it's just like the seasonal flu shot, they just have to put the H1N1 virus in it instead of the seasonal flu virus. My mom is a nurse and she's been to several conferences on this. She said that the reason they have to do a different shot is because H1N1 came from Mexico. Normally whoever makes the seasonal flu vaccine goes to China to see what virus is present. For whatever reason, that's the virus that comes to the U.S. for flu season. Since the swine flu started in Mexico it was unexpected. I just talked to a mom this morning that had her baby vaccinated against seasonal flu and H1N1. Her baby did just fine with everything and she feels that she did what's best for her child. She was afraid that if she didn't get the shot and her child got sick, she would only have herself to blame. Talk to your child's pediatrician about any concerns you have with the flu shots. Right now our plan is to vaccinate, she's also 5 months so we have to wait a little while.
