Hello, this is kind of embarrassing to ask but I was wondering how you know the difference between a mucus plug or just the average discharge. This is my second pregnancy and I just don't remember from my first when I lost my mucus plug. I was 4 weeks early with my son and didn't know I was in labor , so I am very paranoid this time around. I am 34 weeks and have been have alot of discharge in the past couple days. I know I am going to go early this time as well, so I am concerned that maybe it already passed out of me and labor is right around the corner. Can anyone explain the difference?

It doesn't necessarily come out all at once, but you will definetly know when its coming out!!  There is a VERY distinct difference!  With my first baby, it came out in 2 or 3 different pieces.  Once I lost it all it was about 10 days til I had the baby!  The mucus plug can also grow back so its not a great estimator of labor but more than likely if you lose labor can start within a week to two weeks!

Ah yes, the mucus plug. It is quite gross and thick. With my first pregnancy I lost it a week or two before my due date and then my daughter was still a week late. So, as usual it sounds like it is different for everyone.

So it doesn't mean that labor is going to follow shortly after?

And a note: you can lose it little by little and not really notice, also.  Some girls from my other board were talking about that, if you dialate slowly you may never even notice.  And Keela, you won't feel a thing, all it is is a chunk of muscous, and isn't too much thicker than regular discharge.  The only way you'll know if you happen to see it, and you may not ever see it at all. :)

LOL, you girls are funny! I am pregnant with my 3rd and not once have I passed a plug! I had my membrains "stripped" with my last child (2yrs ago), and I guess after they do that it was like loosing your plug.

can you feel when you lose your mucus plug? As in when it comes out?

Yeah, like previous poster said, it looks like a really thick piece of muscous.  However, I have heard of it passing with bloody show instead of by itself.  And even if you lose it, labor could still a week or more away.  A lot of times it is streaked with some blood, but usually it all comes out at once.  If I ever passed mine at night I'd never know since I get up fifteen times to pee it feels like and never turn on the light LOL.

Hi! A mucus plug is alot thicker than your average discharge. It comes out all at once and when you seen it you'll say "Oh this is a mucus plug". LOL! It's like a really thick booger. Gross, I know! You won't miss the passing of a mucus plug ...... trust me.

I was wandering what a mucus plug looked like myself because I have alot of discharge. So I did the best thing I could do at the time. I googled it.....

I found only one picture that really did it for me...a bit gross yes I haft to admit. But I really was concerned that I'd miss the passing of my plug. It literly looks like a big chunk of snot.
