My sister suggested I try taking a few yoga classes while I am pregnant. I have found a couple of places in Houston that offer classes to beginners, but Im not sure if this is such a great idea. Any advice?

Congrats on your pregancy, I did Yoga in my first pregancy and I'm doing it now with this pregancy,it's great for you I dont go to classes as I'm busy so I brought a dvd Yoga for Pregant Women. It's great and so easy to do even for a beginner. It helps all part's of the body, mind and helps during birth.Make sure you go to classes or get the dvd FOR PREGANCY as the positions are different from normal yoga.you start with the brick then by second trimester you use a chair to help with your growing belly.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

If it's a prenatal yoga class, there will be plenty of instruction on what you should or shouldn't be doing as far as poses are concerned....I am taking a prenatal yoga class right now and had only had 1 beginner class before that. I love it. It's personal time for me and it helps me to focus on my body and breathing and relax....I say go for it!

A responsible yoga instructor will tell you what poses you shouldn't do or alternatives that you can do. I highly recommend it; it makes you feel stronger and more centered.

As a general rule, stay away from poses that increase your abdominal pressure: back poses and twists. Also, set your mat up near a wall; your balance may be altered and having a wall to hang onto is great.

Yoga is great, even if you're just a beginner. I personally tend to be a high strung, hyper, and active person and it's real easy for me to get worked up over things. Even before pregnancy, I found yoga to center me. Yoga during pregnancy will help connect you with your baby, and a lot of the moves and positions will help stretch out body parts for delivery. Something to beware of...don't just take a regular yoga class. A lot of normal yoga moves are not specified for pregnancy. A regular yoga class will have moves that require you to be on your back, and that's really not recommended for pregnancy. If you can, find a class that specifies in pregnancy, and find an instructor that knows specific yoga moves for pregnancy.

If you can't find a class near you that offers that, try buying some yoga pregnancy videos. It's not the same as an actual class with an instructor, but it's better than nothing I think.
