Natural Alternatives to formula for 5 month old (can no longer breast feed)

Due to health problems I'm being forced to start a new medication that is excreted in breast milk. Although I'm very much opposed to taking this medication my doctors say it is necessary and are withholding my license until I begin treatment (I need my license to return to work - as I have a 40 minute commute and can't car pool). I do not want to put my daughter on formula so I am looking for mom's who have tried more natural alternatives (like goat's milk and vitamin drops perhaps). Any advice - what worked what didn't?

NOTE: I am in the process of getting a second opinion but it's a slow process in the small town that I'm from and am awaiting a referral out of town. I'm worried that I won't be able to begin treatment in time to get my license back in order to return to work (I must be on treatment for so many months before getting it back). For these reasons I feel like the doctors are giving me no choice but to take this medication.

Julie, thank you so much for the link! I read through a lot of it and it's very helpful. I think I might try that recipe out. The posters really seem to understand why I don't want to use formula.

Have you looked into a breast milk bank? I'm not sure if one would be able to ship it to you...but it's worth a shot! Good luck!

Pediatrician...not going to happen - in our small community you need to be referred to a pediatrician. As for my family doc. - that takes 6-8 weeks to get an appointment. (Although I have booked one). My neice was allergic to every formula on the market and it was recommended that she be put on goats milk as it's very mild and easy to digest. My sister tried it and for the first time in her 6 months of life (at that point) she didn't throw up! I'm not saying it's the only solution and that it will work for my daughter but I've heard and read a lot about the benefits. I'm not opposed to formula (I eventually had to use it for my son as my milk dried up when he was 5 months) but I'm really looking for a more natural alternative. After all, once upon a time formula didn't exist and not all mothers COULD breast feed and the human race is still alive and kicking. I'm just curious to know if anyone tried other things. I should also note that my daughter is on rice ceral once a day and we just introduce strained foods (homemade) as milk was not filling her.

I suggest you get a pediatricians recommendation, but I do not think any would tell you goats milk or vitamin supplements. There are nutrients that baby needs and goats milk is not going to provide. Is there any reason you are so opposed to formula?? All formula is regulated with the FDA and babies do great on it. I wish you the best with whatever decision is made. Would like to know what ends up happening.
