Not gaining weight and breastfeeding?

Rebekah - posted on 08/03/2009 ( 3 moms have responded )

My daughter is exclusively breastfeeding and at her 2 month appointment she was only about 1.5 pounds more than her birth-weight-- she went from being in the 87% to 40%. Anyone else in this situation? Anyone have advice or suggestions other than formula?

I might add, my son weighed the exact same at his 2 month, but the doctor wasn't worried then because he was lighter at birth.

Hope your bay's doing better now. Make sure you feed from one side till it sort of empties and then switch to the other one as the fat-rich milk known as the Hind-milk comes much later when the breast has become softer while feeding. This milk will be fatty and will help the baby gain weight.

Check that the chart is for breastfed babies... i had the same thing told to me, but they were using the wrong chart... instead of being in the 10th percentile, he is in the 97th

is your daughter seeming fussy at end of feeds or not having many wet nappies, if so then she isn't getting enough, if not then she is feeling satisfied

maybe offer her another feed or 2 during the day and see if that makes much difference
