my pedi recommended starting with rice because it's the most gentle on the tummies. But he told me to mix it with fruit juices instead of milk/formula to help combat the possible constipation. Helps add flavor to make it more appealing and gets an extra (small) serving of fruit into their diet

I wish I would have known that, I tried rice because I read easily digestible, and my son was very constipated .. still is ....

To the mom who posted about adding corn syrup to cereal... Um, corn syrup has been linked to obesity, if you read labels, you'll see that it's in everything bad for you and should be avoided! It's really bad for you and definitely NOT something you should be feeding to your baby! You should try mixing in some fruit!

I started with rice (finished with 1 container) then moved to oatmeal. If you are breastfeeding constipation shouldn't be a problem.

I would try rice to start out make sure there's no allergies.. then move onto oatmeal after a week, I'm finding that rice cereal can make your child constipated while oatmeal has more fibre.

Oatmeal here. It has fiber so it won't bind babys tummy. I mix it with pears and bananas. Liam loves it more than he did rice cereal!

When I started my son out on cereal I did the single grain Rice. He's LOVED it, I did try the oatmeal as well and it caused him nothing but gas! Babies tastes are all different and so are the things that affect their gastro. My son is very regular now opposed to just being bottle fed where he would go every other day (which the docs have said was normal but he was uncomfortable). I of course give him some sort of fruit with his rice cereal in the morning such as applesauce or pears, but I've been given the go ahead to give him whatever is in the 1st's group and just have fun with it. The fruit on the side of the cereal is what keeps them from getting binded and develops their taste buds :) Our doc also recommended cereal once a day and some type of baby food another time of the day to start.

I heard that you are supposed to give them rice cereal for the first 2 weeks to get them used of eating it, and then go to oatmeal.

I gave my little man rice cereal when he first started eating cereal and it didn't agree with him at all. On the oatmeal he does great. It may be something you have to try and see about. Good luck!

I have tried both because my daughter wouldn't eat rice so I tried Oatmeal and she loves it... also, as they have stated above rice is a big binding agent and it does bind the babies up... it did it to my daughter when she first started... now we eat oatmeal and applesauce (or some other fruit) every morning for breakfast!! Hope this helped! =]

Brown rice is the easiest for a baby to digest. Making rice porridge yourself is better than buying prepared cereal. Boil a bit of rice very well and blend it.. Supposed to be the best first food for a baby...

From what i understand rice cereal is recommended for a first food as it is the least allergenic of all cereals.

i would go with oatmeal-just plain not mixed or flavored. because its a single grain just like the rice but rice is a binding agent, thats why they have the BRAT-bananas, rice, apple, toast-diet for when you are sick. if you feed your angel rice you run the BIG risk of constipation and even if they dont become fully constipated they have a harder time haveing a BM. :) i learned the hard way and then the ped. explained it to me.
