My daughter never did, an hour after birth she rolled from her back to her side to sleep more comfortable. An since then, she has only slept tummy or side. She just wouldn't sleep on her back.

I'm expecting my second on May 16th, and I know they talk about back sleeping reducing SIDS, and I'm lucky I never had to deal with any of that, but what if this baby will NOT sleep on his back either? Should I try harder to keep him on his back, or let him sleep however he is most comfortable?

What do you all think?

back is best!

imagine how awful you would feel if your baby DID die of SIDS and was laying on their back? you would always feel like you did something wrong.

also, someone in the small base i live in just lost their baby to SIDS (baby was about 8 weeks old) and baby WAS laying on her tummy... scary

i thought babies were supost to be put on their sides not on their backs untill they are old enough to roll or lift their heads....i thought putting babies on their backs and they get sick they can chock on it...maybe im old fashion and i havent had a baby in 8 years and things might have changed but im 29 weeks pregnant and i will be putting my son on his side with a posioner or just a blanket rolled up so he cant roll......

I agree with PP in that if they are big enough to roll over they are going to... I would reccomend getting a sleep positioner it keeps the baby from going on their belly

My 17 month old has slept on her tummy since the day we brought her home from the hospital.   I really wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you are both getting sleep that is what matters.  I figure for years they were telling people to sleep babies on their bellies and now it's changed.  I am sure their are dangers either way but if your baby is big enough to roll over then they are going to lay however they're comfortable.

I think side sleeping is ok. I have a padded thing that I bought for either keeping newborns on their backs or supporting them on their sides. You might want to look into this too.

i do that too, and my daughter has always been a loud breather, so if i didnt hear her breathing i would always kind of listen close and poke her or something to get a reaction :) hahaha, my dad made fun of me because i literally checked her no less frequently than every 5 minutes for the first six months.

My son slept on his side.  I asked my doctor about it at the time, because putting him on his back would last all of two minutes, and he said not to worry as long as his breathing area was clear and his face wasn't turned into the mattress and he was unable to roll to his stomach.  With this one I'm planning on co sleeping with, so he'll be close at hand in the side car sleeper.  I'm sure that this little boy will be as contrary as his brother and I'm expecting him to be uncooperative with the back to sleep thing too.  I just made sure I had a fan running to circulate the air (something they now are saying helps prevent SIDS, I've just always slept with a fan going), and would check him frequently.  I'm the type though that I wake up and make sure both my son, now 3 1/2 and my husband are both breathing okay during the night...LOL.
