I've done lots and lots of reserch on better ways to wean them from the bottle the the best so far is just go cold turky. See I'm stuck in a hard spot I have a 29 month old daughter and a 16 month old son and I'm trying to wean them both from the bottle and potty train her. She does really well at night time without the bottle but not during the day. And my son is total night and day he has to have it at night but inthe day doesn't care what he dranks out of as long as he gets the drink so I guess just be prepared for (I'm guessing a week) of restless nights and then after that things will be good....:):):) !!hopefully!!!

I gave my DD a sippy cup at 6 months when she was still bf (and bmilk in a bottle when I worked) and she was a pro at it by 9 months but even now at 13 months she only drinks mouthfuls now and then and not a lot at once. B/c she's still a tiny thing (only 17 lbs) we still give her formula when she gets up and for a night-night bottle and I'm not sure how to stop that b/c she seems to think the sippy cup is for play more than drinking...

my son loved the bottle i was dreading having to take it off him. When he was about 2 he had started bitting all the teets to streds then i said this is crazy having to buy new teets every time i go to the supermarket.I then told him when there all gone thats it no more it got to the last bottle an we were at a lake and being cheeky he though his bottle into the water thats when i said oh no,no more bottle the birds have got it. He had a few tears at what would have been bottle time, but i just said the birds have it and he still to this day if you ask him where his bottle is he will say the birds have it his 41/2now we had a couple of days of unsettlenest but within the week he had given up

My son Max is 13 months now and he drinks whole milk with meals in a take and toss sippy cup (It doesn't have a leak proof valve, so for me its easier to clean), he has a straw cup filled with water through out the day and a bottle at night with toddler formula, not sure when I'll cut out that last bottle, but he does sleep through the night and I don't want to mess with that:)) Do they really need any juice?? Cuz I don't really give him any, he eats plenty of fruit. Good luck with your bottle weening, just don't put too much pressure on yourself, do what your comfortable with:)

I started giving my daughter a sippy cup just before her first birthday on 5/22. She is fine drinking her juice or water from it, but doesn't like milk in the sippy cup. I've tried all kinds of cups... with the straw (which she loves), the Nuby, standard sippy cups... she's very good with the straw cups, but still will not drink much milk from them. I give her whole-milk yogurt daily to make sure she gets some form of dairy in her diet. I only time I've given her a bottle since then is when I notice she's not drinking enough fluids throughout the day, then I give her a bottle of water with a splash of juice or G2.

my daugher TOOK HERSELF off the bottle. She got sick when she was about 10 months old and wouldnt drink from a bottle at all, so i put her milk in a sippy cup. From then on, she wouldnt drink from anything but a cup. She doesnt wake up at night, so the night time bottle has never been an issue for me. However, now she won't drink milk AT ALL, but at least I didnt have a problem with the bottle.

We gave our daughter a straw cup for her first Birthday, and never looked back! She hasn't even missed it!

i started giving my daughter a sippy cup that COULD spill, i found these nonspilly cups were to difficult she didnt know how to use it and that here was water in it. the spill one allowed me to show her there was waer in there to drink, she then learnt to use a nonspill. one point for the docs, say oh yes we are weaning her off so u dont get a lecture, and just wait and see i found my daughter just stopped using her bottle or only drinking half her milk all by herself so i just threw her bottle away and we havent looked back. hope this helps!

Getting them used to a sippy cup FIRST. And then just slowly replace the bottle with the cup for each time during the day when they have milk. I NEVER put formula in the cup. That way the cup was only associated with cold whole milk. Once she turned 1 we quit the formula bottles all together and she never even noticed. She had been having whole milk in sippy cups with dinner for weeks. Good luck! Don't over think it.

My 1yr old son drinks his milk from the bottle but we will try to start making him drink from a sippy cup soon.

My son will drink out of sippy cups at day care, but refuses to take them at home. He prefers a real cup or a bottle. We still do one bottle of milk in the morning and one before bed. He also LOVES to carry around a bottle of water all day. Is there a reason we have to switch to sippy cups at 1yr? Is there harm in letting our little ones drink from a bottle until they are comfortable w/ the sippy cups?

Both my kids were breast/bottle fed, so they were already a little used to drinking out of different textures, but I had more trouble with my first son (now 4) than my one year old because he would not tip his head back for anything. I was able to get him to drink from the straw cups. My one year old did great with the soft spout cups with handles. I held it for him when he was first getting used to the spout and then started handing it to him to get him to hold it. I had to tip the cup for a couple weeks to show him, but now he does it all by himself. He'd been a breast milk only baby, so I changed him over to cows milk by mixing half and half for a couple weeks and now he drinks only cows milk out of his cup and breast feeds once a day before bedtime.

Although it may sound costly at first....buy a few different spouts...including soft, hard, & straws. Allow your son to try each kind and see what he likes best. Our daughter didn't like sippys at first, but loved to drink from a straw. Now she'll use anything. We began to wean her from a bottle at 9 months just to make sure we were off the bottle by 1 year...but it only took about 1 week :) Most important if there is a struggle, is to not give in too early. If he doesn't want to drink from a cup, don't give him the bottle. Go play or take a walk and then later in the day try again...if he sees you dump milk or juice from the sippy back into a bottle he'll know that he can have it his way if he hollars loud enough. If you have to give a bottle at some point to make sure he is hydrated, just give it to him that once. I think he'll do great though, it is harder on us than them. Also, if he is teething it may be tough at times, be patient :) Good Luck.

We weaned her off just like that, gave her sippy cups, she wouldnt drink it @ first, but thats all we would give her and she finally started drinking it, now she uses a sippy cup everyday. and we give her a drink before bedtime then put her to bed on her own, which is pretty lucky considering she sleeps all night after that.

hmmm. now im wondering if i should be cutting that first bottle? only thing is he really seems to look forward to this one lol so for the people that have weaned from bottle, are you just giving normal cows milk or toddler formula?

We've started, my son turned 1 on May 11th, and he only gets a bottle before his night-time bedtime. Sippy cups throughout the day only, he has adapted really well, so he knows that when he gets a bottle it's time for bed.

wow i was really shocked as didn't even think to take my son off bottle! he has one bottle in the morning and one at night with his toddler formula, but drinks milk & water from sippy cup during the day...

with my daughter, i would give her a sippy cup with diluted juice or water in it just to get her used to seeing one and using one. now she drinks her milk from it too. i use the playtex nursers and i dont want to continue to buy the liners for them!

My daughter just turned 13 months and clearly has no intentions of giving up her bottle just yet. I have offered several different types of sippy cups...soft spout, hard spout, straw type, etc...she will not use them for more than a drink or 2 at a time. My Dr. told me at her 1 yr check up that she should use a sippy and start weaning from the bottle, but I am not going to force the issue to please the Doc. This is my 4th child, and the older 3 have developed just fine, youngest being 13 yrs, and none of them are still using a bottle ;) I would just go with what is most comfortable for you and your baby.

My daughter will drink juice from any sippy cup, but when it's time for milk (before bed and naps with us) she wants the Munchkin brand cups with the soft spout. She had no problems at all when we stopped giving her bottles..it was a slow process so she never even noticed it! She won't even take a bottle now!

We started my daughter on the soft nippled sippy cup when she was about 8 months. She gave us no problem with it but within a month or two she learned how to bite the middle part off and it was making a huge mess and a huge choking hazard. It took her a little while to get the hang of the hard spout, but once she did we switched her over to those. I think it's best to start off with the soft spout (and keep them if you don't have an issue like me!) I would say they're not too different than drinking from a bottle. I also have heard that the silicone straw ones are the best but my daughter has never gotten the hang of them. A huge difference from the bottle- you have to bite down on the straw to get it to open. Good luck!

I agree with Melissa, We tried doing a softly approach when Rose was about 9 months, but she just refused and wouldnt take any milk unless it was in a bottle. But once she turned a year we just didn't give in and within a couple of days she was happily drinking her milk from a open Doidy cup! Good luck!

i tried to give mine a sippy cup since she was 6 months would not drink out of it at all i throw all bottles away and give her the sippy cup at 1 years old and she had no choice but to drink out of it trust me it hurts to see them cry but its worth it just a couple days and he will drink out of it and i know so many others moms that did it like this too it worked for me !!!!

I started giving my daughter a sippy cup with the soft spout at 6 months and then by 7 months she was completely off from the bottle because she liked the sippy cup better. Now at 1 year she uses the sippys with the hard top and the cups with straws. I would recommend using the soft ones with whatever your son likes best and then gradually switch over.

We just give our daughter a sippy cup with whole milk in it through out the day. We use the sippy cups with straws since they say its better for them. We took the bottle from her when she turned 1 on the 27th. We haven't had a single problem. However she still wakes up at least once in the night and I give her a bottle then with warm milk in it. But that's the only time she gets one. I would just say be sure your giving her a sippy cup throughout the day.

Does your son drink water or baby juice from a sippy cup at all?
We gave our son a sippy cup with a soft spout (like the nuby ones) from 6 months and he really enjoys it, we now have 2, one for milk and the other for either juice or water.
It may take a little getting used to, but it`s such a relief when there are no more bottles :)
