Teaching a 3-year old literacy skills?

Is anyone else teaching her May '09 child to read? My daughter has learned her alphabet and the sounds the letters make. She recognizes almost all the letters by sight. She memorizes every book I read to her. She tells me she wants to learn to read.

What strategies are you using?

I am not actively teaching my son to read. He also knows all his letters, and can identify some words, like his name, Mommy, Daddy and his brother's name. I am letting him lead for the most part. just before he turned two, he became very interested in letters, so we spent a lot of time drawing and naming them. Since then, his interest has waned, although we still play with letters and he will tell us when he sees letters (ie, today he noticed that one of Daddy's onion rings looked like a Q).

As far as teaching him to read goes, I am planning to wait until he takes more notice of the words in books. Right now, I occasionally point words out to him, but he doesn't really like me doing that - it interrupts the story... lol :) Once he is more keen, I will do more, but I do not want to push him in a direction he is not ready to go. I want reading to be a pleasurable thing for him, so I don't plan to force anything on him. Right now, he and I can easily read together for an hour. I worry that if I push him too hard to read some words himself, that that will change.

I think that as kids grow, as long as books are a part of their lives they will pick up the skills. They are curious by nature, so they will ask questions and learn they way that best suits them :)
