Has anyone been in contact with their local La Leche League and if so what were your impression?

I am very interested in breastfeeding and La Leche League keeps coming up in the literature I have been reading. I was wondering what people's personal experiences with them have been as the closest group or rep is over an hour away from my little rural community. Is it worth looking into?

My hospital's lactation specialist briefly spoke at one of my prepared childbirth classes. She seemed nice, yet seemed to stress not introducing bottles at all (which isn't feasible for me considering I have to go back to work) and she also seemed to be a bit judgmental concerning non-married parents (my boyfriend & I aren't married).  I haven't been in contact with my local rep, but you could always get in contact with your hospital's lactation consultant. I've also received helpful advice from moms who've been there.

I would say like any information you get, it's not gospel and neither is a western doctor's advice. I liked to go to the support groups with my daughter and got a lot of good info but take it with a grain of salt. Brenda's right they may have a stace that you disagree with (like no binkie or NEVER using formula for example) but as my mom used to say you don't throw out the baby with the bathwater! :) It's worth it to have support if you need it!

Thanks so much for the input... that's what I've been gathering already but wanted to hear from moms that weren't testimonials out of a book!  Best of luck breastfeeding on your second try. Hope it lasts as long as you and your  baby want it to this time! :)

LLL is an excellent proponent of breastfeeding.  They can be a little, ah militant sometimes, but their heart is always in the right place I feel.  I've not yet had contact with mine, but I do intend to breastfeed this time again.  Hopefully it goes better than last time!  (I had gall bladder surgery when my son was 4 weeks and I dried up, but it was wonderful while I could do it!).  I know I've heard some of them who are a little pushy within the organization trying to get non breast feeding moms to consider it, but they have some of the best lactation consultants you can find usually.  LLL is kinda the foremost in breastfeeding, and they're literally all over the world.
